GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
(1) There are TWO sections, A and B, in this Paper. You are advised to finish Section A in about 45 minutes.
(2) Section A consists of multiple-choice questions in this question paper, while Section B contains conventional
questions printed separately in Question-Answer Book B.
(3) Answers to Section A should be marked on the Multiple-choice Answer Sheet while answers to Section B should be
written in the spaces provided in Question-Answer Book B. The Answer Sheet for Section A and the Question-
Answer Book for Section B will be collected separately at the end of the examination.
(4) A Periodic Table is printed on page 20 of Question-Answer Book B. Atomic numbers and relative atomic masses of
elements can be obtained from the Periodic Table.
(1) Read carefully the instructions on the Answer Sheet. After the announcement of the start of the examination, you
should first stick a barcode label and fill in the information required in the spaces provided. No extra time will be given
for filling in the information after the ‘Time is up’ announcement.
(2) When told to open this book, you should check that all the questions are there. Look for the words ‘END OF SECTION
A’ after the last question.
(4) ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS. You are advised to use an HB pencil to mark all the answers on the Answer Sheet, so
that wrong marks can be completely erased with a clean rubber. You must mark the answers clearly; otherwise you
will lose marks if the answers cannot be captured.
(5) You should mark only ONE answer for each question. If you mark more than one answer, you will receive NO MARKS
for that question.

compound) and 12 (Patterns in Periodic Table).
There was no MC question on topic 9 (Rate of reaction) in this mock paper.

d be density of water, c be specific heat capacity of water, ∆T be change in temperature.

solution]
22. Which of the following compounds CANNOT form condensation polymers? [bifunctional / react]

group, -OH group, -NH2 group) at each of its end.

(2) HOCOCH=CHCH2OH
Students probably are not aware that the -NH2 group in the compound can react with the -COOH group
to undergo condensation polymerization.

25. Consider the compound below:
CH=CHCH=CHCH3
A. 2 B. 4 C. 6 (28%) D. 8
The arrangement of methyl groups in the first C=C cannot be changed as the C=C is in a ring.
For the second C=C, each C is bonded to two different groups. Hence, the compound has a pair of cis-trans
isomers due to the second C=C.
For the third C=C, each C is also bonded to two different groups. Hence, the compound also has a pair of
cis-trans isomers due to the third C=C.
As the compound is not symmetric, it has a total of 4 cis-trans isomers: cis-cis, cis-trans, trans-cis, and trans-
trans isomers.
Students were weak in deducing the number of possible isomers of a given compound.

30. The equilibrium constant Kc for the reaction PCl5 (g) ⇌ PCl3 (g) + Cl2 (g) at 80oC is 0.20 mol dm-3. In a 2.0
dm3 closed container kept at 80oC, there is a mixture of 0.20 mol of PCl5 (g), 0.30 mol of PCl3 (g) and 0.30
mol of Cl2 (g) at a certain moment. Which of the following combinations is correct at that moment?
Students probably did not know how to deduce the direction of net reaction from the comparison between
Qc and Kc.
33. Which of the following statements concerning the Periodic Table is correct?
A. The melting point of the Group II elements increases down the group. (31%)
As the size of metal ion increases down Group II, delocalized electrons are further from the nucleus.
strength of metallic bond decreases melting point decreases
B. The boiling point of the Group IV elements increases down the group.
Going down Group IV, the structure of element changes from giant covalent structure to giant metallic
structure. The change in boiling point varies and does not follow a single trend. (C: 4827; Si: 2355; Ge:
2833; Sn: 2602; Pb: 1749) Is this statement really correct?
C. The elements are arranged in the order of increasing relative atomic mass. (30%)
The elements are arranged in the order of increasing atomic number.
D. The electrical conductivity of the third period elements increases from left to right.
The electrical conductivity of the third period elements increases from group 1 to group 3 and drops
sharply at Si and decreases from left to right thereafter.
The temperature of the system is suddenly increased from 25oC to 50oC at time t and finally a new
equilibrium is attained at 50OC. Which of the following graphs can represent the variation of [B(aq)] with
time?
As the reaction is an endothermic reaction, increase in temperature shifts the equilibrium position to the
right. So, [B(aq)] decreases after time t, until attaining a new equilibrium.
A. (14%) B.
[B(aq)]
[B(aq)]

As no extra B(aq) is added at time t, the [B(aq)]
will not increase at time t.
C. (19%) D.

Students failed to deduce the correct
direction of shift in equilibrium position.
For A, NaBH4 is a reducing agent. As the compound does not have -CHO or -CO groups, it has no reaction
with NaBH4.
For B, acidified K2Cr2O7(aq) is an oxidizing agent. As the compound does not have -OH or -CHO group, it
has no reaction with acidified K2Cr2O7(aq).
For C, PCl3(l) is for converting alcohol to haloalkane. As the compound does not have -OH group, it has no
reaction with PCl3(l).
For D, as the compound has an ester group (-COO), it can undergo acidic hydrolysis by reacting with
H2SO4(aq).
Students were not well familiar with the different reagents and their targeted functional groups and
corresponding type(s) of reaction.
36. Consider the following statements and choose the best answer:
1st Statement 2nd Statement
At 0oC, water molecules in ice are packed less The water molecules in ice are held by
closely together than in liquid water. hydrogen bonding.
A. Both statements are true and the 2nd statement is a correct explanation of the 1st statement.
B. Both statements are true but the 2nd statement is NOT a correct explanation of the 1st statement
C. The 1st statement is false but the 2nd statement is true. (19%)
D. Both statements are false.
The water molecules in ice are tetrahedrally arranged and packed in an open structure with a lot of empty
space. In liquid state, the open structure collapses and thus the water molecules are packed more closely.
Hence, the molecules in ice are packed less closely together than in liquid water. The 1st statement is
correct.
The water molecules in ice and in liquid water are all held by hydrogen bonding. So, the 2nd statement is
correct. Yet, the presence of hydrogen bond is not the reason for the difference in packing of water
molecules in ice and liquid water.
