Step 3: Create a Bootable Windows PE CD-ROM

In this video, Ill demonstrate how to create a bootable Windows Preinstallation Environment CD with ImageX support. The Windows Preinstallation Environment (or Windows PE) is a minimal operating system that can be used to boot a computer when deploying Windows. To create a Windows PE CD, I'll use the technician computer that has the Windows AIK installed on it. I'll start by opening the Deployment Tools Command Prompt as an administrator. At the command prompt, I'll run the copype script to copy the files I need for my preinstallation environment. Both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures are supported, but in this demonstration I'll create a 32-bit version of Windows PE. The copype script creates a working directory that includes a base Windows PE image file, called Winpe.wim. The script also creates an ISO directory that Ill use when I create the bootable Windows PE CD. I need to copy my Windows PE file, WinPE.wim, into the ISO\sources folder and rename it Boot.wim. Next, I copy the ImageX tool to the ISO directory so that the tool is available for use on the Windows PE disc. ImageX is a tool that captures an image of the software installed on the computer. Next, I'll create the ISO file. I'll do this by using the OSCDIMG (OS-CD-IMG) tool, which is included in the Windows AIK. After I verify that my ISO file was created, I can close the command prompt and burn my CD. I'll use Windows 7 to burn my ISO file to a CD. When my disc is finished, I'll eject the CD so I can use it to boot the reference computer, which Ill show in the next video.
