Body Paragraph Structure

The PEEL Method of Paragraph Development

P = Point This is your topic sentence for the paragraph, which is the main point for the
paragraph. For a rhetorical analysis, you should name the technique within this sentence.
You can also provide a transition from the previous paragraph, if necessary.

E = Example This is an example that illustrates the point you are making in the
paragraph. Your illustration must contain a quotation from the text, using MLA-style in-text
citation. Quote the passage where you see the technique you’ve identified being used.
Your illustration might also paraphrase some other details from the text.

E = Explanation This is where your analysis really happens. How does the example
you provided support the point you are making in the paragraph? How do readers think or
feel about the passage you quoted? How does it change the way the readers think or feel
about the topic and/or the author? Be sure to write at least two sentences for this part.

L = Link Your final sentence of each body paragraph, after the point, example, and
explanation, should link the main idea in that paragraph back to your thesis (your overall
main point for the paper). For a rhetorical analysis, this sentence should explain how the
use of that technique helps or hurts the author’s overall argument.

Sample paragraph from an analysis of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from

Birmingham Jail”:

Throughout the letter, King works to develop an ethos that shows he can be trusted. His tone is

not belligerent or hostile. Instead, he makes several rhetorical moves to show his audience that he has a

deep understanding of the situation and good intentions for solving the problems of racial injustice. King

works to build his credibility with his audience by explaining that he is also a member of the clergy. In

response to the accusation that he is an “outside agitator,” King states, “I have the honor of serving as

president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern

state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.” When his audience reads this statement, they see not only

that he is religious (like they are) but also that he is a leader of an organization that spans across the

southern states. They are more likely to listen to him and be convinced by his argument because he is

establishing that his values, like theirs, are based on the teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition. This

is just one example of the many ways in which King succeeds at building a credible ethos in order to

convince his audience that his campaign is just and necessary.
