Notes:
• Let’s look at two different Commvault HyperScale XTM appliance models, the HS2300 and the
HS4300.
• The smaller of the two, is the 12 drive HS2300 appliance which supports drive sizes of 4, 8, and 14
terabytes and fits in 1U sized rack spaces. The HS2300 can total a usable capacity as little as 25
terabytes per cluster, up to 87 terabytes per cluster.
• The larger HS4300 appliance supports 8, or 14 terabyte drive sizes. The HS4300 uses 2U server
nodes. The usable capacity for the HS4300 per cluster is either 149 terabytes or 261 terabytes. The
HS4300 only comes in those two configurations.
• Please note that the usable capacities shown here account for all of the reserved space required by
the underlying file systems, the costs associated to offering erasure coded resiliency, and to the
services across the stack.
• The HS2300 comes with an optional HBA addin that can provide users with the flexibility of a SAS
or FC HBA, allowing you to connect to Tape Libraries and/or Storage Arrays for and not limited to,
IntelliSnap operations. The HS4300 on the other hand, includes both, by default.
• The networking cards are also swappable with RJ45 compatible connections if the 10 gigabit
ethernet small factor pluggable connections are not compatible to the environment.

Notes:
Each of Commvault’s approved hardware vendors will have to build their N4, N12, and N24 appliances
matching these minimum hardware specifications to support the HyperScale XTM platform. While we just
spoke about HyperScale XTM Appliance as a whole cluster of three nodes, we’re going to focus on a per
node basis for Reference Architecture to highlight some of the differences that exist between each of the
platforms. These differences are
• And an additional flash device for Commvault file system related operations
• While we’re looking at the tech specs for reference design, let’s touch upon the cache layer quickly.
• Take note of the fact that there’s a larger flash storage solution on the N24 architecture allowing for
larger index caches and deduplication databases. The larger flash storage also helps with
supporting other operations such as live mount and browse operations for organizations to recover
high value virtual machines.
• The operating system will reside on mirrored RAID-1 configurations on their respective SSDs. This
is available just the same on both the N12 and N24 configuration and for a comparison point, is
available only on the larger HyperScale XTM Appliance configurations.
• Networking offerings and requirements for the HyperScale XTM Reference Architecture solution are
identical to the HyperScale XTM Appliances but just keep in mind that Cisco UCS Servers are
typically exempt from this if a networking administrator is managing their network via Cisco Fabric-
Interconnects.
• A final few note about 20TB configurations for N4, N12 and N24 configurations.
• N24 systems using 20TB drives must be configured with a minimum of 768GBs of memory. N4
and N12 configurations can handle 20TB drive configurations today, but in order to do so, they must
have sufficient memory to do so which is available in the related BOM listing for their respective
models.

Notes:
• There are three Reference Architecture Node Types available: N4, N12, N24, which denote the
number of data drives in each node.
• The Usable capacity ranges for the different node types are shown here, as well as the capacity
increment when adding single nodes
• You may NOT mix node types within a single HSX storage pool. If you start with N4, you must add
N4. If you start with N12, you must add N12 nodes.
• The drive capacity across nodes must also match. If a storage pool starts with 4terabyte drives,
then all additional nodes must be configured with 4Terabyte drives.
• When configuring a new HSX deployment, keep in mind that any number of nodes may be added
after the initial deployment. However, it’s important to understand and agree with the customer on
what a reasonable capacity increment would be. Proliferation of a large number of small capacity
nodes may pose increased total cost of ownership (TCO) in the forms of administrative overhead, as
well as additional hardware and maintenance costs, vs a fewer number of larger nodes.
• Majority of this information we’ve gone over in regards to sizing plays key in identifying the amount
of nodes to purchase initially. For environments that are already up and running, there is additional
guidance that can be used to help inform a customer on how many nodes they should buy when
purchasing the HyperScale XTM solution.

Notes:
Reference Architecture clusters that are using 18TB drive configurations, can expand with additional
nodes that are using 20TB drives. This is an exception that can only be made if the 18TB drives that
were being used in the cluster, are no longer available, like for example, a discontinuation. In those
scenarios, prior to the expansion of the cluster with any number of additional HyperScale X nodes,
those 20TB drives, will need to be reformatted to 18TBs in order for them to fit into the already
active cluster. This is very specifically a consideration for existing clusters only and does not impact
new clusters at all that may start with 20TB drives.

Capacity Reporting
Capacity Reporting
Notes:
• Regularly monitoring capacity is critical to ensure enough space exists to service backup operations.
This data can be obtained through the Library Growth report found within Command CenterTM.
Using this tool either through cloud reporting or by engaging directly with the customer, can help
inform you or your customer on what HyperScale hardware should be chosen initially and also when
to prepare for further expansion to avoid running into space issues down the road.
• In this particular graph, you can see that the HyperScale XTM pool was created in February. They
underwent what would be a typical growth pattern, where the usage spikes initially, as backups start
being written to the pool, but as the workload and retention settles down over months, you see
reasonable monthly percentage changes. This is not an environment that is any immediate danger
of filling their storage any time soon, but it’s important to monitor this in order to plan properly to
avoid any unexpected surprises and account for other external factors like possible supply chain
problems or lead times.

COMMVAULT PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION - INTERNAL AND PARTNER UNDER NDA USE ONLY- DO NOT DISTRIBUTE
Capacity Reporting
Capacity Reporting
Notes:
• This particular scenario is one that you'd really want to be watching very closely, however.
• You can tell that the customer started using the pool in December. They experienced a period of
steady growth, likely as part of a predictable onboarding or migration of workloads.
• But, in June something happened. There was a sizeable increase in usage. If the customer knew
this was coming, and it was factored in during the initial sales cycle, everything may still be fine. But
if this was something no one knew was coming, it's a bit of a cause for concern. The usage leveled
out for a couple months, but then in September of 2023, usage started to climb noticeably again.
• They're currently targeted to be full by the middle of February in 2024. If conversations haven't
already started about adding capacity, that should get underway quickly, to ensure that there's
sufficient time to order the needed appliance or Reference Architecture hardware, get it installed,
and added to the existing deployment. They only have a little more than 60 terabytes of capacity
available, just a little over 20% -- but as you can tell, their last month's growth was over 50
Terabytes alone. That's not sustainable if it continues, without running out of capacity.
• The main point to all of this is that now, more than ever, we need to be diligent about monitoring our
customer's data growth. Where server lead time may grow into months, there's almost never too
early of a time to discuss growth with your customers.

Notes:
Let’s wrap this up by covering the key points about capacity planning.
• Any good plan comes with the right data. Getting that data involves monitoring capacity using the
capacity reporting capabilities available with Commvault®. Growth patterns and behaviors may
surface on observation of trends over time. This can both be a preventative and strategic tool to
properly allow reaction time before critical capacity events or to minimize sudden capacity surprises.
• HyperScale uses Commvault’s deduplication engine to effectively store away a user’s data but with
deduplication comes the understanding that modifying retention or deletion of data may not
necessarily grant a 1:1 space reclamation. Targeted changes can be and should be used where
possible to minimize impact of any sudden data changes.
• The goal of capacity planning is to be able to react early. Whether there are external factors like
market dynamics or other internal factors, planning enables sufficient buffers for approval, ordering,
delivery, and installation of additional capacity. Having a contingency plan like Metallic Recovery
Reserve, can also address some short term capacity needs.

Hardware Support
Roles and responsibilities
prior to deployment
• Rack and stack must be done by customer or hardware vendor • All elements of the software and hardware stack supported by Commvault®
• Customer owns physical and logical connectivity • Service Levels
• Customer owns support contract with hardware vendor • 9x5, NBD Parts SLA (included)
• Commvault will work with vendors to resolve any issues (interaction • 24x7, 4-hr Parts SLA optional1
must be led by customer) • Parts delivery guaranteed within SLA window
• Commvault does not handle hardware calls directly
• Remote Installation Assistance included to get appliances up and running
• Commvault software support based on elected support level
• 'Rack and stack' and connections performed by the Customer
agreement
• Or purchased add-on Arrow 'rack and stack' service
Notes:
• As mentioned before, the Hardware support for validated reference architecture is maintained
through the specific hardware vendor. Commvault® will work with hardware vendors to resolve any
issues but Commvault® will not initiate calls with hardware vendors directly. Such engagements
must be arranged by the customer.
• Commvault® handles all elements of the software and hardware stack with the
Commvault HyperScale X™ Appliance. 9x5 Next Business Day Parts SLA is included as standard,
which can be optionally upgraded to 24x7, 4-hour parts SLA for areas that do have it available.
Parts SLA in this context means that once hardware has been determined faulty, parts will be
shipped and received within the time frame as the contract dictates.
• At the time of writing this training, a remote installation assistance service is included by Commvault
support to help customers get their appliances up and running. The RIA ends once
the CommServe and/or the storage pool is configured, any configuration beyond that point must be
done by either the customer, or a paid professional services engagement. This service is currently
included for all purchases of Commvault HyperScale XTM Appliances including expansions.
• If in the known future, there are plans to relocate the HyperScale X TM Appliance to a different region
or country then where it’s being initially deployed, make sure to discuss with Commvault ® prior to
the relocation in order to ensure that the hardware support agreement is valid and maintained.
• Finally, for HyperScale X Appliance, there is an expectation that the hardware is cabled, and that
networking is configured and connected as Commvault ® implementation services do not perform
any physical connections of any kind. Partners may offer services though that may facilitate those
needs, but for the purposes of say, the complimentary RIA, Commvault® iiimplementation services
will not perform those connections.
