define key concepts such as sexual orientation, gender identity,
gender expression, and the difference between sex and gender

recognize the diversity within the SOGIE spectrum, including

various sexual orientations
•Sexuality is diverse, and there are many different types. It can take time to figure
out the sexuality that fits you best. And your sexuality can change over time.

•Coming to terms with your sexuality can be a very liberating, exciting and
positive experience.

•Sexuality is an important part of who you are. There is no right or wrong, it’s
about what’s right for you.

•Some people have a hard time accepting others who are different to themselves.
If someone gives you a hard time about your sexuality, it’s good to talk to
someone about it. You don’t need to deal with it by yourself.
•Stigma is negative prejudice given to a certain individual (e.g. gays are sexual predators,
lesbians are drunkards, bisexuals are promiscuous)

•Discrimination is a specific negative treatment done to an individual or group based on

stigma (e.g. non-inclusion in the military, dismissal from work, non-admission in schools)

•Homophobia/Transphobia is an irrational and unfounded fear against homosexuals and

transgender (hate crimes)

•Internalized homophobia is the negative feelings an individual has towards oneself due
to his homosexuality.
MEDICAL – homosexuality is a disease, it can be cured.

RELIGION – being lesbian or gay is a sin, your soul will burn in hell

SOCIO-CULTURAL – assumption that everyone is heterosexual and

therefore must get married

LEGAL – criminalizing consensual same sex relationship

ECONOMIC – gays are valued only because they give money

is both exhausting and demoralizing.
When people are misgendered, they feel invalidated
and unseen.
When this happens daily, it becomes a burden that
can negatively impact their mental health and their
ability to function in the world.
