Scavenging Note
Scavenging Note

---
1. **Direct/Crossflow Scavenging**:
- Fresh air enters through **ports on one side** of the cylinder.
- Exhaust gases exit through **ports on the opposite side**.
- The flow of air is **straight across** the cylinder.
2. **Loop Scavenging**:
- Fresh air enters and exits through **ports on the same side** of the cylinder.
- The air flows in a **loop** inside the cylinder, pushing out exhaust gases.
3. **Uniflow Scavenging**:
- Fresh air enters through **ports at the bottom** of the cylinder.
- Exhaust gases exit through a **valve at the top** of the cylinder.
- The flow of air is **one-directional** (uni = one).

✅ Advantages:
❌ Disadvantages:
Loop scavenging is a good choice for small two-stroke engines like motorcycles
and boats because it's simple and effective.
1. Complex Design – Needs extra parts like exhaust valves, making it harder
to build.
2. Expensive – Costs more to manufacture and maintain.
3. Needs Regular Maintenance – Exhaust valves wear out faster and need
frequent care.
4. Takes Up More Space – The engine is bigger compared to other
scavenging methods.
5. Needs Extra Air Supply – Often requires a blower or turbocharger, adding
to costs.
Uniflow scavenging is great for power and efficiency but comes with higher costs
and maintenance needs.
