OVERVIEW OF AGRICULTURAL

EXTENSION

Prepared by: Janeth L. Lacostales

What is the meaning of Extension?
 Extension is an informal educational process directed toward the
rural population. This process offers advice and information to
help them solve their problems.

 Extension also aims to increase the efficiency of the family farm,

increase production and generally increase the standard of living
of the farm family.
Why extension is important?
 Extension is essentially the means by which new knowledge and
ideas are introduced into rural areas in order to bring about
change and improve the lives of farmers and their families.

 Extension, therefore, is of critical importance. Without agricultural

extension, farmers would lack access to the support and services
required to improve their agriculture and other productive
activities.
What is the objective of extension?
 The objective of extension is to change farmers' outlook toward
their difficulties.

 Extension is concerned not just with physical and economic

achievements but also with the development of the rural people
themselves.

 Extension agents, therefore, discuss matters with the rural people;

help their problems and to decide how to overcome these
problems.
Definition of Terms

Agricultural Information Systems

 is a system in which agricultural information is generated, transformed,
transferred, consolidated, received and feedback in such manner that these
processes function working together to support knowledge utilization by
agricultural products.

An Agricultural System is
 A system of beliefs, cognitions, models, theories, concepts and other
products of the mind in which experience of a person or group with respect
to agricultural production is accumulated.
Extension science

 Encompasses the body of knowledge which has accumulated

as a result of research information and experience with
extension.

 Extension as a policy instrument changes with the uses to

which it is put and the historical context within which it is
deployed. The development of extension science over time
reflects these changes.
Government Organization (National Level)

 The Department of Agriculture is the principal agency of the

Philippine Government responsible for the promotion of
Agricultural development growth.
 provides the policy frameworks
 helps direct public investment and in partnership with local government
units (LGU’s)
 provides the support service necessary to make agriculture and agri-
based enterprises profitable
 help spread the benefits of development to the poor, particularly those
in rural areas.
Agricultural Extension

Is a non-formal type of training at the service of farmers,

which constitutes a link between research and the farmers
aiming at effecting changes in farmers’ professional
behavior towards the improvement of their livelihood.
Agricultural Extension: An Intervention for Sustainable Development

• PRINCIPLES:
Communication and Education – These are agent’s role:
• Communication – to pass on useful information of technology to people
whom need them.
- Extension starts with what the people know and what they understand.
- Extension is essentially an educational process, and is dependent on the
voluntary participation of the people in introducing change.
- Extension teaches people new knowledge and skills in relation to their
current interests and needs.
- Extension employs a wide variety extension communication strategies.
Work with Rural People

• For impact and sustainability, it should be working with and not

working for the people.
• Extension agents must assist them by providing all the information
needed and possible alternative solutions to clientele problems.

 Extension identifies and works accordingly with target categories

in the community.
 Effective extension seeks to facilitate or help people things for
themselves.
 It would be a disservice if extortionists do things for the people.
Accountability to the Clientele

• Extension agent must justify to the organization whatever actions

he/she takes and be accountable and responsible to the clientele
on whatever advice or information given to them.

Two-way process linkage

 Disseminates information and technology to receive feedback from
clientele so that their needs can be better fulfilled, learn from the
clientele the wealth of their experiences.

Cooperate with other agencies

 Extension is only on the aspect of the many economics, social, cultural
and political activities that has to produce change for the betterment of
the rural masses.
Different Target Groups

 Extension clientele is made up of various target groups with

different needs, social status, culture and economic
background;
 extension therefore cannot offer a package of technology
for its clientele due to this heterogeneity; and
 there must be targeting of extension, meaning different
programs and technology packages for different target
groups.
Developing Rural Leadership

Once farmers and their representatives exercise

responsibility more effectively, lower officials and
staffs are prompted to begin working more
energetically and responsively.
Nurtures and sustain the natural environment

 Creating in the people the appreciation and the

consciousness to protect the natural environment.

 Choosing technologies which would not directly or indirectly

contribute to the pollution and the consciousness to protect the
natural environment.
 Extension should make people understand the intricacies of the
eco-system because only then would they be able to think and
act accordingly.
KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION

Extension science is beginning to be able to make

propositions about extension as sub-system of a larger
system in which research and utilizers also form sub-
systems.
