MODULE 1
Assessment:
1. Define the following terms
a. Agricultural Extension: Agricultural extension is the process of providing advice,
information, and assistance to farmers to help them improve their farming practices,
production methods, and overall well-being. It goes beyond increasing agricultural output
and aims to contribute to balanced social and economic development in rural areas.
b. Extension Worker: An extension worker is an individual, often employed by government
agencies or organizations, responsible for disseminating agricultural knowledge and
innovations to farmers. They play a crucial role in bridging the gap between researchers and
farmers.
c. Agricultural Development: Agricultural development refers to the progress,
improvements, and advancements in agricultural practices, technologies, and systems
aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, sustainability, and the overall quality of life for
rural communities.
d. Extension Delivery System: The extension delivery system (EDS) is an organized
mechanism used to transfer knowledge, skills, and resources to farmers, enabling them to
adopt improved farming practices and technologies. It involves three major components:
research system, change system (extension workers), and client system (farmers).
2. Discuss the new agricultural model. Is the new agricultural model applicable to the
Philippines. How?
The new agricultural model mentioned in the text emphasizes participatory, demand-led,
market-led approaches, pluralism of service providers, decentralization, and the utilization of
information and communication technology (ICT) in agricultural development. It focuses on
collaboration, resource sharing, and sustainable practices to ensure agricultural growth
without harming the environment. This model is applicable to the Philippines and can benefit
the country by promoting sustainable farming practices, enhancing communication between
stakeholders, and empowering farmers to take an active role in decision-making and
innovation.
3. What are the roles of extension workers in the development of the country?
Extension workers have two primary roles:
- Knowledge/Communication/Innovation: They provide farmers with knowledge and
information about new agricultural innovations, helping them understand and make informed
decisions.
- Educator/Facilitator/Catalyst: They assist farmers in gaining confidence, organizing
themselves, and addressing their own problems. They encourage farmers to take initiative
and actively participate in extension activities, fostering personal development and self-
reliance.
4. What are your characteristics/traits that can be used as an extension worker
someday?
Traits that can be valuable for an extension worker include:
- Effective communication skills
- Empathy and understanding of farmers' needs
- Adaptability to diverse agricultural contexts
- Problem-solving abilities
- Patience and perseverance
- Commitment to sustainable and ethical practices
- Continuous learning and willingness to update knowledge
5. Discuss the 3 components of the extension delivery system and what are the
relationship of the three components?
The extension delivery system consists of three components:
- Research System: Responsible for generating locally adapted and verified agricultural
technologies.
- Change System: Comprises extension workers and technicians who package and
disseminate information and innovations to farmers.
- Client System: Represents the farmers capable of evaluating and adopting technical
innovations into their production systems.
The relationship among these components is crucial for the effective transfer of technology
and feedback from farmers to researchers. It creates a two-way flow of information, ensuring
that the research aligns with farmers' needs and that farmers benefit from the latest
innovations.
Activity 01
Agricultural and Home extension in your community
Objective: The objective of this activity was to gain insights into the agricultural and home
extension services in our community and understand the challenges faced by Pedro
Lechoncito, a family member engaged in farming.
Procedure:
1. Identification of Family Member: I identified Pedro Lechoncito as the family member
engaged in farming activities.
4. Reflection and Sharing: After gathering this information, we reflected on the role of
extension services in addressing the challenges faced by my papa and the broader
community. It was evident that extension services play a crucial role in equipping
farmers like him with the knowledge and tools to adapt to changing environmental
conditions.
Conclusion: This activity provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by my Papa
Indo as a farmer, particularly related to climate change. It also highlighted the significance of
extension services in providing support and information to help farmers overcome these
challenges. Sharing these findings with the family will promote discussions on how to further
improve extension services for the benefit of farmers like him.
MODULE 2
Assessment:
1. Define the following terms:
a. Philosophy: In the context of extension, philosophy refers to the body of principles that
underlie and guide actions, particularly those related to extension work. It provides a
framework for decision-making and sets standards for conduct.
b. Principle: Principles are fundamental beliefs or rules that serve as a foundation for guiding
actions and behaviors. In extension, principles help shape the approach to working with
individuals or communities.
c. Education: Education is a conscious process that involves the active participation of
learners. It is a means of acquiring knowledge, skills, and understanding, often with the goal
of bringing about behavioral changes or personal development.
d. Extensionist: An extensionist is a professional who engages in extension work, which
involves providing non-formal education and practical information to individuals or
communities, typically in agriculture, fisheries, homemaking, and community organization.
3. What are the traits that an extensionist must have? Can you elaborate them?
An extensionist should possess the following traits:
- Technical competence
- Energy
- Creativity
- Resourcefulness
- Integrity
- Dependability
- Emotional stability
- Empathy
- Interest
- Commitment
- Patience
- Missionary zeal or dedication to service
- Good public relations skills
- Ability to communicate with diverse groups
- Common sense
- Good health
These traits enable extensionists to effectively engage with individuals and communities in
the educational process and provide support for their development.
5. According to our module. Extension is an educational process. Is this mean that all
teachers are extension agent? Yes or no? Explain.
No, not all teachers are extension agents. While both teachers and extensionists are
involved in education, they operate in different contexts and with different objectives.
Teachers typically work within formal educational institutions, such as schools, and follow a
curriculum to educate students. Extension agents, on the other hand, engage in non-formal
education and work outside traditional classroom settings, often in communities, to provide
practical information and promote behavioral changes related to specific fields like
agriculture, fisheries, and community development. Extensionists focus on practical, hands-
on learning and community engagement.
