The facilitator asks the students to read a scenario that presents an unethical instance and
asks the students to choose from the multiple choices how to address the issue.

Initiation Questions:

1. How do you best address this unethical stature of Wanda?


2. What could be the possible result of your decision?
3. Justify the cause or causes that prompt for you to arrive at a possible decision.
4. Do you believe that such decision can be linked to your integrity at work? If so, why
or why not?

Communication Ethics

1. Importance of Ethical Communication


- It is fundamental to responsible thinking, decision-making and the development of
relationships and communities within and across contexts, cultures, channels and
media.
- It enhances human worth and dignity by fostering truthfulness, fairness,
responsibility, personal integrity and respect for self and others.
- Unethical communication threatens the quality of all communication and
consequently the well-being of individuals and the society in which we live.

Qoute from Maria Ressa:

“Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without
these three, we have no shared reality, no rule of law, no democracy.”

2. Characteristics of Communication Ethics


1. All relevant information
2. Truthfulness in every sense and not deceptive in any way;
3. Accurate and the sincerity-avoiding language that manipulates, discriminates, or
exaggerates; and
4. Fair presentation of ideas.;
- Time Tested Ideals of Communication

Example:
Having an open and honest conversation with your loved ones.
3. Factors Influencing Ethical Communication
- Ethical aspects consider the complexities in the communication process that
discerns what to disclose and not to disclose, thus, facing three simple choices: to
speak, to listen or to remain silent.
- Timing. Information disclosed at one point maybe considered unethical in another
period of time.
- Ethical Context. The ethical nature of communication must be considered within
the context of who, when, what and where. It is important to know who is speaking
to whom, what and where.

E. Activity (10 pts)

The class is divided into 4 groups. Each group is given a flaglet. The first group to raise
and correctly classify the sentence according to structure will earn 2 points. The other
group has the chance to steal if wrong answer is given.

1. The cat lived in the backyard, but the dog, who knew he was superior, lived inside the
house.
