Memory span

The document outlines an experiment on the span of memory, defined as the number of items recalled immediately after presentation. It discusses factors affecting memory span, the methodology of the experiment, and presents results indicating that the subject has a memory span of 9 digits, higher than the group average of 8 digits. The findings suggest gender differences in memory span, with women generally outperforming men.

6-9-24 SPAN OF MEMORY NAME OF EXPERIMENTER:

NAME OF SUBJECT

INTRODUCTION

Span of Memory is defined as the number of items that can be recalled immediately after a single
presentation. A person's ability to recall and recite back information is the functional definition of
memory span. If someone's memory span is being tested, they will usually be asked to repeat back
or reproduce the presented sequence in order. When tested, the elements presented can include:

 Letters

 Words

 Numbers

 Syllables

Memory span can also be considered in terms of its structural aspects since it requires processes of
attention, memory, imagery, and associability. Memory span can be influenced by both external and
internal factors that contribute to a person's ability to recall the presented information. The average
person's memory span is 7 items. For example, most people can remember a 7-digit phone number
and hold it in their memory long enough to write it down. Span of 5 to 9 digits (see seven plus or
minus two) is considered typical for an adult. Short-term memory refers to a person's ability to
accessibly hold information temporarily. Long-term memory refers to the vaster storage of
knowledge held in the brain, including a person's record of prior events.

Factors Affecting Span of Memory

Memory span can be affected positively or negatively and like most brain functions, a person's
capacity for either can fluctuate. The following factors can impact memory span:

 Fatigue

 Time of day

 Attitude

 Distractions

 Medications

 Stress

 Age, sex, and race

 Memory test administration including type of test, timing, methods used

These are some of the factors that can affect overall memory span capacity or can have an impact on
the day that a person's memory span is tested. People can also improve their memory span and
working memory capacity by practicing and will likely perform better overall if their stress levels are
well managed day to day.

Problem: To assess the span of memory of the subject

4.DISCUSSION

It is observed from the Table 1 that the subject ( ) has has got the span of memory of 9 digits . He
found it easy to recall and reproduce 9 digits . He had the difficulty of recalling and reproducing 10
digits. When the subject’s span of memory is compared with the group’s span of memory, it is found
that subject has got higher span of memory than group. When the subject’s span of memory is
compared with Men/Women group, it is found that subject has higher/lower span of than Men/
Women group. It is also not left unnoticed from the introspective report that subject has found the
entire experiment was fun, engaging and interesting . He experienced anxiety when the number of
digits go beyond 8 . He showed interest in completing the experiment.

In the group, subject …. has got the highest span of memory of digits. In the group, subject …. has
got lowest span of memory of digits. The Span of memory for the Men group is …. digits as seen
from the mode value. The Span of memory for the Women group is …. digits as seen from the mode
value. When the span of memory for the women group is compared with the men group, it is found
that women have higher span of memory than men. This shows that there is gender difference with
regard to span of memory. In the men group, subject… has got the highest span of memory . In the
men group, subject …. has got the lowest span of memory. In the Women group, subject… has got
the highest span of memory . In the women group, subject …. has got the lowest span of memory.
The span of memory for the group is found to be …. digits as seen from the mode value. There are
individual differences with regard to span of memory.

5.CONCLUSIONS

1. Subject ….. has got the span of memory of 9 digits

2. The Group’s span of memory is 8 digits
3. Women have higher /lower span of memory than Men
4. There are individual differences with regard to span of memory
