T he World Atlas is the most comprehensive annual report on activities, achievements and investment plans in
the hydropower and dams sectors. The country reports are researched each year so contain original and up to
date research of potential, plans and priorities for future development. The structure of the power and water
resources sectors are clearly set out, as well as policy statements and project updates. Tables in the Atlas give
details of global hydro potential and development, as well as the role of hydro in the national energy mix,
major dams under construction > 60 m high of all types, as well as CFRDs and RCC dams. The research is
conducted directly with power authorities, electricity regulators, water authorities, regional organizations and
ICOLD national committees, providing the latest data each year, and reflecting progress in the global energy
transition.
For those working for the first time in a particular country, information can be found on the structure of the
power sector, key organizations and their responsibilities, development potential, progress to date, and future
plans for the next five to 10 years. The World Atlas is used as an annual reference guide by policy and
decision-makers worldwide. Advertisements can be reserved close to one of the following editorial areas:
• Word hydro potential and development • Pumped-storage projects status
• Major dams under construction • RCC dams under construction and completed
• Concrete faced rockfill dams • The world survey of hydro and dams (reports by country and by continent).

EVENTS
T he major event of the year for those involved in hydropower and dams is the annual
HYDRO conference, organized in collaboration with the national utility of the host
country, and professional associations such as ICOLD, IEA-Hydro, EREF, UNIDO and
CHINCOLD. Sessions cover technical, environmental/social, and financial and contractual
issues and a Technical Exhibition facilitates companies bringing their expertise to the
attention of key decision-makers from about 80 countries. More than 30 per cent of
participants at the annual events taking place in Europe are owners and operators of
hydro plants alongside consultants, suppliers, civil contractors, financiers, academics
and students. The financial and legal sectors are well represented. The technical
exhibition showcases the expertise of around 200 international companies. There are
no other events in the world specifically focusing on hydropower which attract such
international participation.
A t these regional events in Asia and Africa, international experts meet to focus on
issues of specific relevance to the region. Past Asian events have taken place in
Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, and African ones have been held in
Ethiopia, Morocco, Namibia and Uganda. The focus is on enhancing international
collaboration in the development countries, and helping to advance hydropower
development in the regions of the world with the greatest potential and the greatest
need for clean renewable energy, and multipurpose water infrastructure. About 700
participants from at least 45 nations generally attend. As well as technical, environ-
mental and climate experts, representatives of the major IFIs and regional development
banks regularly participate, including the World Bank, IFC, ADB, AfDB, EIB and others.
FPV events
The elegant port city of Thessaloniki, overlooking the Aegean Sea, will be a perfect venue, in a country
entering a new era of hydropower and dam development. Both conventional new hydro schemes and
a number of pumped-storage projects are planned in Greece, as well as some project upgrades.
