News and Bid information

The news and bid section of the journal includes short reports on the most
significant hydropower and dam projects worldwide planned or under construction,
based on information from operators, consultants and manufacturers. Tender
notices are published from governments and other developers to alert readers
wishing to bid on future projects. Our online news section keeps readers up to
date with news, bids, events and other activities in between printed publications.
There is also a ‘Forum’ for questions, comments and discussion among industry
experts.

Technical Development and Project Focus

The Technical Development section gives details of newly launched products or
systems and research projects. Hydro or dam schemes with unusual or challenging
features, or which have reached milestones in their implementation, are included
in the Project Focus section. These sections are an excellent way to draw attention
to your company’s R&D output and project involvement.

RE Updates, FPV and ESG

While the main focus of the Journal is hydroelectric power, some pages in each
issue are devoted to keeping readers up to date with other forms of renewable
energy development, such as wind, solar and wave power, and including hybrid
developments and storage systems. Another section focuses specifically on
floating solar PV on reservoirs, a rapidly emerging technology around the world.
Other pages deal with environmental and social governance, including reports
from policy-makers, and examples of business models reflecting good practice
in sustainable development.
THE ANNUAL HYDROPOWER AND DAMS
GLOBAL OUTLOOKS

The World Atlas of Hydropower & Dams

T he World Atlas is the most comprehensive annual report on activities, achievements and investment plans in
the hydropower and dams sectors. The country reports are researched each year so contain original and up to
date research of potential, plans and priorities for future development. The structure of the power and water
resources sectors are clearly set out, as well as policy statements and project updates. Tables in the Atlas give
details of global hydro potential and development, as well as the role of hydro in the national energy mix,
major dams under construction > 60 m high of all types, as well as CFRDs and RCC dams. The research is
conducted directly with power authorities, electricity regulators, water authorities, regional organizations and
ICOLD national committees, providing the latest data each year, and reflecting progress in the global energy
transition.
For those working for the first time in a particular country, information can be found on the structure of the
power sector, key organizations and their responsibilities, development potential, progress to date, and future
plans for the next five to 10 years. The World Atlas is used as an annual reference guide by policy and
decision-makers worldwide. Advertisements can be reserved close to one of the following editorial areas:
• Word hydro potential and development • Pumped-storage projects status
• Major dams under construction • RCC dams under construction and completed
• Concrete faced rockfill dams • The world survey of hydro and dams (reports by country and by continent).

The World Map

T he World Map showcases the latest water resources development projects in operation,
under construction and planned. It is a global report on one map.
The World Map is a source of reference displayed in the offices of numerous utilities,
government departments and other organizations, as well as at many project sites,
all over the world.
Sponsors of the map can take advantage of being part of this ‘snapshot’ of the leaders in the
profession, by booking a box advertisement on the perimeter of the map.
The World Map is circulated at key industry events throughout the year and 10 000 copies
are distributed to journal readers and professional associations.

EVENTS

Annual HYDRO events in Europe

T he major event of the year for those involved in hydropower and dams is the annual
HYDRO conference, organized in collaboration with the national utility of the host
country, and professional associations such as ICOLD, IEA-Hydro, EREF, UNIDO and
CHINCOLD. Sessions cover technical, environmental/social, and financial and contractual
issues and a Technical Exhibition facilitates companies bringing their expertise to the
attention of key decision-makers from about 80 countries. More than 30 per cent of
participants at the annual events taking place in Europe are owners and operators of
hydro plants alongside consultants, suppliers, civil contractors, financiers, academics
and students. The financial and legal sectors are well represented. The technical
exhibition showcases the expertise of around 200 international companies. There are
no other events in the world specifically focusing on hydropower which attract such
international participation.

Biennial AFRICA and ASIA regional events

A t these regional events in Asia and Africa, international experts meet to focus on
issues of specific relevance to the region. Past Asian events have taken place in
Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, and African ones have been held in
Ethiopia, Morocco, Namibia and Uganda. The focus is on enhancing international
collaboration in the development countries, and helping to advance hydropower
development in the regions of the world with the greatest potential and the greatest
need for clean renewable energy, and multipurpose water infrastructure. About 700
participants from at least 45 nations generally attend. As well as technical, environ-
mental and climate experts, representatives of the major IFIs and regional development
banks regularly participate, including the World Bank, IFC, ADB, AfDB, EIB and others.

FPV events

I n response to the increasing global interest in this emerging technology, we began

in 2021 to organize events devoted to hybridization and floating PV systems on
hydro reservoirs. The first (during the pandemic) was held on line, and the second, in
April 2024, took place in Antibes, France.
It was acknowledged that H&D had successfully brought together experts in the PV
sector with reservoir owners and dam safety experts for the first time, at these
events. This was crucial as both sectors have much to learn from each other, in terms
of potential, safety and environmental issues, and many other aspects to ensure
efficient future developments in this important field.
