LET’S GET STARTED!
How did it feel like doing the task? Did you know that you can feature such diagram when you apply for your
dream job? That’s because knowing what you do in a day is as important as setting your goals. What you do on
a daily basis with the goals you set, matters. Remember that “You are what you do everyday” advice? That is entirely
true, especially for “goal diggers”. Every day, every hour is worth something. And, if everything else adds up to your
smart work and passion, you get to say: “If I do what I love, I'll never work a day in my life”

Since you are still a SHS learner and

everybody has to start somewhere, consider this
lesson as a springboard. The first thing you should
know is there is a ticket for employment.
The image that you see to your left is called a
RÉSUMÉ (noun /ˈrez·əˌmeɪ/), the term for a
written marketing tool that briefly summarizes
one’s skills, abilities, experiences and
education.
Its principal PURPOSE is for the employer
to appraise your qualifications upon which to
decide whether you merit an interview. In other
words, it is used in job applications whether the
job is entry-level or your second or other one/ part-
time.
The image to your left is a modern version of
a résumé. If you notice, a particular aspect is
PERSONALITY, one that helps you give the
best impression.
Its TYPES are Chronological, Functional,

10. Through Line: This appears if the sender is a subordinate who writes to a person higher in position than

Through: LUCILA M. SANDOVAL

Chief
Accounts Division Madam/e : (refers to the addressee)
11. Attention Line: This business need of the letter may replace the salutation; while the name of the superior is

cc.: Accounting Office
pc.: Legal Department
18. Reference Initial/ Dictator/ Typist Line: This shows the dictator’s initials (ALL CAPS), just in case there is
typist (whose name is written in lowercase); it is used for veracity/ responsibility purposes
e.g. DBM: cel DBM/ cel DBM* cel
In writing letters, you may allocate space depending on the length of the body but the standard space is TWO
SPACES before and after a part. For the body, observe CLARITY in writing and avoid one that is too complicated or
difficult to understand or wordy & generally unintelligible jargon. Also, use SPELLED OUT WORDS in the letter to
make it look more dignified/ attractive. Always align the heading and complimentary close if both parts are used. Do
not include ‘continued’/ ‘cont.’ at the foot of the first page. And, most importantly, YOU ARE WHAT YOU WRITE;
details speak louder than the whole document.

Letters have different types and formats. Attached below are samples with labels of the parts included)
for your reference. The first sample is a letter of application for college admission and it is done in full
block format, where all parts are indented to the right. The other sample is a letter seeking for employment
in modified block format, wherein the dateline, close and signature are aligned and indented to the left,
opposite the rest of the letter.
A letter for college admission, as the terms speak for themselves, is a business letter written to express
one’s interest in pursuing a course or degree in a college or university of his/ her choice, citing reasons
why he/she chooses such course and the college/ university itself.
A letter of intent is a business document used by fresh graduates seeking employment or job applicants
in general to express their interest in a vacancy or a job opening in a company. Here, they write why they
are the best people to be considered in the job, given their experience, affiliations, accomplishment and
credentials.

The records show how I consistently value excellence, smart work and grit in all of my endeavors in the
past two years and how I will do the same in the field that I am about to embark on. I believe in the caliber
of the programs that you offer and the roster of your faculty members. Having alumni-professionals from
your school (like some of my teachers and relatives) coached and equipped me with many life skills
inspired me to attend the same university and catch the same character.

I will be more than grateful to hear a favorable response from your good office regarding admission exam
particulars, online registration and other specifics. Thank you in advance for your consideration and may
