08-Exponents and Powers

Chapter 8 covers the concepts of exponents and powers, explaining exponential notation as a way to represent repeated multiplication of a number. It includes laws of exponents, the effects of negative integers, and examples demonstrating how to express numbers in exponential form. Additionally, it discusses standard notation for large numbers and the significance of zero as an exponent.

EXPONENTS AND POWERS

The notation of writing the multiplication

Similarly, if we multiply 5 by itself for 6 (iv) 22 2 2 2×2 4

In 56, the number 5 is called the base of 56

and 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 25 × 5 = 125

Clearly, 243 > 125  3 >5 5 3
So, 53 × 33 = (5 × 3)3 = (15)3

(ii) 23 × 25 = = (5 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 × 5) ( 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7)
