CHAPTER ONE

GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION INSTITUTE

MAPPING DIRECTORATE

THEMATIC TEAM

The General Process of Thematic Map Production in Thematic Team within

existing current Context

CHAPTER ONE

1. Introduction
A map is graphic or symbolic representation of geospatial features which is
mapped based on scale and usually on a flat surface. It is a symbolic representation
of selected characteristics of a place, which shows information about the world in a
simple, visual way. Geospatial features represented on a map for example,
geographical features, geological, or geopolitical of an area of the earth or of any
other celestial body. (https://www.britannica.com/science/map) A map gives
information about the world by showing sizes and shapes of countries, locations of
features, and distances between places. It can show distributions of things over
Earth, such as settlement patterns. They can show exact locations of houses and
streets in a city neighborhood.

A map is a symbolic depiction emphasizing relationships between elements of

some space, such as objects, regions, or themes. Thus, "map" became a shortened
term referring to a two-dimensional representation of the surface of the world.

There are many different types of maps, which are usually classified according to
what they are attempting to show. One common point of view is that there are two
main types of maps:-

 Those which summarize the actual landscape (topographic and general

reference maps); and
 Those which describe ⁄ comment on specific features using the landscape as
a background or for context (all other maps – usually called thematic maps).

Since our focus is on thematic map production process, the document describes
and explains on a single topic of thematic map category.

A thematic map is a type of map that portrays the geographic pattern of a

particular subject matter (theme) in a geographic area. This usually involves the
use of map symbols to visualize selected properties of geographic features that are
not naturally visible, such as temperature, language, or population. In this, they
contrast with general reference maps, which focus on the location (more than the
properties) of a diverse set of physical features, such as rivers, roads, and
buildings. Alternative names have been suggested for this class, such as special-
subject or special-purpose maps, statistical maps, or distribution maps, but these
have generally fallen out of common usage.

From geospatial and information providing or topic context, A thematic map is

also called a special purpose, single topic, or statistical map which shows spatial
distribution of geographic features of earth’s surface. It is intended to communicate
a single theme or narrow set of themes. It focuses on the spatial variability of a
specific distribution or theme (such as population density or average annual
income). A thematic map shows the spatial distribution of one or more specific
data themes for selected geographic areas. The map may be qualitative in nature
(e.g., predominant farm types) or quantitative (e.g., percentage population change).

1.1Team Definition

As per new structure of Geospatial Information Institute, Mapping Directorate

is one the directorate found in the Institute. Mapping Directorate has five teams
under it. Among the five teams under the mapping directorate thematic team is
one, which given a responsibilities to fulfill the mission of the institute. The
definition which characterizes the team or what the team is doing (team
responsibility) as whole is taken from team character of mapping directorate driven
from the structure of the institution. We didn’t add anything here, since each and
every thing the team is doing have to be in conformity with the institution’s
structure formulated for the team.

The responsibilities of the team are the following:-

-Collect, organize and prepare various existing and new information in the office
and in the field;

-Convert data prepared by different coordination systems at different times to one

and the same system and prepare for further work;

-Create user-focused (customer requirement) maps using existing and new data
collection;
-Participate in various studies and trainings organized by the group and provide
practical trainings as needed;

-Develop training manuals, performance monitoring forms, forms and various

strategies.

Generally, thematic team produces different types of thematic map focusing on

specific theme/topic; the team is producing on various types’ of scales, according
to customer requirements.

1.2 Objective

1.2.1 General Objective

The general objective of this document is presenting the assessment of the

general work process of thematic map production in thematic team within existing
current context of producing thematic map.

1.2.2 Specific Objective

The specific objectives of these documents are listed below

-To indicate what thematic team is doing, what is thematic map?

-To assess and present the existing standards for data/feature extraction and
Geodatabase

-To present the materials and method used in the thematic map production

-To present the work flow/gridline in thematic map production

-To present errors and their correction methods in thematic map production

-To present the products of the team and delivery ways to our customer

1.3 Significance

The significance of this document is, even though it is describing the general
work process which has no complete standards, it is somewhat important for the
staff member’s and new entry of employee in thematic map production to be
familiar with the science (the software using) and what the team is doing. It is also
used as reference for the coming researcher on the team to solve the problems in
the team, since this document comments the challenge/problem within the team.

1.4 Scope

The scope this document is specified to only thematic team of mapping

directorate on current situation of the team. It is applicable to all role players,
activities and processes involved in the production of thematic map.

1.6 Limitation

Limitation encountered during the preparation of this document was time

shortage, since the overlapping with other work forced us to stop document
preparation for a moment and rush to work which delivered to the customer. As a
result our attention was diverted to delivering of products to our customer. May be,
here and there divergence of our attention makes a problem on logical flow up and
connectivity of ideas on writing the documents. Since, the team is new to us it
takes time to familiarize with the process in the production of thematic map, but
the team is as much as possible working with existing in the team .
