AnSc 22 Laboratory Exercise No. 5 Revised 2025
Introduction
Swine, referred to as pigs, belong to the species Sus scrofa domesticus and are part
of the family Suidae. These adaptable animals are raised for multiple purposes, such as meat
production, research, and companionship (Mishra et al, 2029). Comprehending the
classifications and breeds of swine is essential for maximizing pig farming and improving
production efficiency. Each breed has unique traits that influence growth rates, feed
conversion, and meat quality, which in turn affect profitability and market appeal (Bonde et al.
2004). By recognizing the specific characteristics and requirements of various breeds, farmers
can make informed choices regarding breeding, nutrition, and management practices aligned
with their objectives and environmental factors. Furthermore, understanding these
classifications aids in preserving genetic diversity, enhancing animal health, and fostering
sustainability within the industry. Ultimately, this knowledge enables better resource
management and satisfies consumer demands for premium pork products (Ahern 2000).
Objectives:
At the end of this laboratory, the students will be able to:
1. Identify common breeds and types of swine.
2. Identify the distinguishing characteristics including the place of origin for each
breed of swine.
3. Enumerate the factors to consider in selecting a breed of swine to be raised.
4. Identify and discuss the different characteristics of good gilts/boars.
5. To determine how proper swine breed selection can help the society in
addressing the Global agenda for sustainable livestock under the SDG 17-UN.
Methodology:
1. On-farm discussion and demonstration of swine body scoring.
2. Laboratory discussion on the different swine breeds as well as the different criteria in
selecting swine breeders.
