CHAPTER 1 ACTIVITY

COM 1250: Interpersonal Communication

CONVERSATION BETWEEN TERRELL & DAVE
Dave: Customer Service Department. Can I help you?
Terrell: Oh, hello, uh.. [baby cries in the background] I have a problem with my internet.
I have the SuperFast Speed Internet with the Canva modem and router...and it isn’t
working.
Dave: I’m sorry, sir. What seems to be the matter?
Terrell: Well, I woke up this morning and it just isn’t working. I’ve tried hitting reset and
all the buttons are blinking, but my computer, TV, nor phone will connect to the internet.
Dave: Oh right. Has the power recently gone off at your house?
Terrell: No. Why?
Dave: It’s just that the Canva series modem and routers are very sensitive to power
surges. Have Newton’s Laws of Motion affected the modem or router in any way?
Terrell: Oh... I’m uncertain of…
Dave: You haven’t dropped either one, have you?
Terrell: No, I haven’t? [Baby continues crying] Look, I’m in a hurry because I’m trying to
get to daycare. I just want it fixed.
Dave: Yes, sir. I see. If you go to our website www.CanvaInternet.com, and go to the
troubleshoot page, you can find Frequently Asked Questions on how to troubleshoot
your modem and router.
Terrell: Yeah, I can’t do that because my internet doesn’t work.
Dave: Oh yes, of course, I’m sorry. Have you tried resetting the modem and the router?
Terrell: Yes, I did. I told you that when we first got on the phone.
Dave: Oh ok. Sorry. Would you like for me to schedule a technician to come out?
Terrell: Yes.
Dave: Ok, it looks like the earliest a technician can be there is 3 weeks from today. Will
the hours between 8am and 10pm work for your schedule?

Terrell: THREE WEEKS?... and I’m supposed to take an entire day off work to wait for
the technician? [baby cries louder]
Dave: Uh, so would you like me to schedule it?
Terrell: NO! I want to cancel my service. Can I speak to your manager?
Dave: Uh, ok. Can I tell her what it is regarding?
Terrell: It’s about my internet that doesn’t work!
Dave: K bro. Chill. Imma put you on hold while I put you through to her.
Terrell: Ugh. Ok. [Baby cries]

4. What evidence of psychological noise can we infer from the conversation?
5. What channel are Dave and Terrell using to communicate?
6. What is the physical context for Dave and Terrell’s conversation?
7. What is Dave and Terrell’s relational context?
8. In a capitalist society where profit is important, customer service is important, as
they ensure the product sells and customers are satisfied. In the United States, it
is common for employees to operate under the rule that the "customer is always
right." We can see this evident in the conversation between Dave and Terrell, as
this influences how the two individuals interact. This is an example of what type
of context?
