The essence of literature review is important to research in that it provides theoretical,

methodological and empirical foundation for an research. It does not only align a research
with the available knowledge on the research in question but also points to gaps that are
found in the available knowledge on the subject. It also perfects the research questions and
informs on the choice of methodology. Literature review should be above the level of just
summarisation but should show evidence of critical analysis that is deep and a mature level of
intellect. Even though it has its challenges, a well done literature review enhances research
rigor, ensures originality and scholarly contribution. A literature review can create a robust
foundation of a study, this can be achieved by adoption of a systematic research strategy,
employing theoretical frameworks and maintaining a critical approach.

A literature review is a systematic, explicit, and reproducible method of identifying,

evaluating and synthesizing existing research on a given topic (Boote & Beile, 2005).
Literature review provides context, gives supporting theoretical frameworks to the research in
question. The literature may guide on choosing fitting methodology. In advancing study the
review moves from description to critical analysis, identifying contradictions and debates in
the area that is under research.

Literature review plays various roles in research. One of its primary function the establishing
of the theoretical and conceptual foundation. A thorough review identifies theories and
conceptual models that will guide a scholar’s research. When one uses existing theories, the
literature review allows the researcher to choose the most suitable framework for their
research where they can align their work to existing models and theories where it is
necessary.

Identification of gaps in existing research is another function of a literature review. Gaps

may be classified as empirical, theoretical and methodological gaps. It is through identifying
these gaps that the research may justify the relevance of their particular study which may be
able to play the role of filling the existing gap, therefore creating new knowledge.

It also plays the role of informing research questions and hypotheses. It cab refine research
questions and hypotheses by aligning them to existing studies. A poorly developed review
may result in vague, redundant, or research questions that lack originality. The questions
should be precise, researchable and should contribute to the body of knowledge, therefore
one may value the necessity of a literature review in the research process.

Literature review is instrumental in coming up with a sound methodology. One may review
prior studies and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in design, sampling techniques, data
collection instruments and analysis methods. One can utilise a comparative analysis which
may help them come up with the best research methodology thereby showing evidence how a
literature review is an essential part of a research process.

In avoidance of duplication and establishing of credibility, literature review is an essential

mechanism for ensuring such. With well-done literature review, a research is built on a solid
and credible foundation. It can prevent redundancy on the part of the research and the field at
large. It shows evidence of the scholar’s familiarity with the scholarly code, thereby
reinforcing credibility of the research. If one does not accustom themselves with prior
studies they run a risk of duplicating and coming up with superficial findings. It is therefore
essential for one to have a credible literature review for a research process to be authentic.

However, for an effective literature review, it should have a critical and analytical approach.
It should be logical and coherent in structure. It should be comprehensive and covering up to
date issues. There should be integration of theoretical and conceptual frameworks. It should
have diverse viewpoints rather than favouring a simple narrative. It identifies competing
theories and debates, demonstrating intellectual engagement.

A good literature review should go past just listing studies but should be able to analyse their
contribution to research. It should be able to examine their limitations and relevance of the
study to the body of knowledge. It should follow logical flow, organizing information
thematically, chronologically or methodically. A well-structured review enhances readability
and ensures clarity in argumentation. It should be exhaustive, incorporating both classical
works and the latest studies. It should cover key journals, books, conference papers and
reputable sources.
Despite the importance of conducting a literature review, there are however challenges
involved. The challenges involve information overload, identification and assessment of
quality sources, balancing breadth and depth and synthesizing diverse studies.

With growth of academic literature, being able to filter what is relevant and what is not in
studies is a mammoth task. It therefore requires one to employ effective use of databases,
have a systematic search strategy and employ the use of citation management tools such as
EndNote or Mendeley to mitigate this challenge.

To ensure a high quality literature review, a researcher should be able to develop a systematic
search strategy. They should organize literature using citation management tool, it reduces
redundancy. They should avoid writing with a descriptive tone but rather employ a critical
and scholarly tone. They should evaluate studies rather than merely reporting them. This
would distinguish their literature review.

To conclude, the literature review is an indispensable part of the research process which
provides theoretic, methodological and empirical foundation. It posits the research within the
existing knowledge but at the same time identify gaps, refine questions and inform the kind
of methodology one may use. It should show depth of analysis and showcase intellectual
maturity. Despite its challenge, a well conducted review enhances research rigorousness and
ensures its originality and scholarly contribution. When one adopts a systematic search
strategy, employ theoretical frameworks and maintain a critical approach, they can create a
literature review that serve as a robust basis for their study.
