Job Title: Extension Worker (Coffee and Other Crops) – 1 Position

Reports to: Operations Manager, EKiBBO Farming Services


Location: Mukono and Buikwe (knowledge/experience of central region is a preference)
Time Frame: 1 year (could be extended based on performance)

Company Overview:
EKiBBO operates in Mukono District with over 800 smallholder farmers growing coffee, cocoa, avocado,
jackfruit, vanilla and bamboo, and is expanding to 1500 farmers by December 2025. Our business model
is to link farmers to a range of services – guaranteed markets, logistics support, training on improving
production and agroforestry models, farm inputs, loans, carbon credit schemes, and we take a small fee
for the linkages made. While coffee is the primary value chain, our model is to support farmers to grow a
wider variety of crops and tree products that help the coffee trees to be more productive, while also
providing additional income to the farmer, as well as environmental benefits through increasing
biodiversity and carbon capture.

We are looking for an experienced extension worker who can be an asset and significantly contribute to
EKiBBO’s achievement of its goals by providing support to EKiBBO registered farmers on agronomy, logistics
and business development.

Role and Responsibilities:


As an Extension Worker at EKiBBO you will build up a long-term relationship with the local farmers and
play a crucial role in linking them to our range of services, critically our marketing and agricultural
expertise. Key to this role is collection, input and management of data into our digital farm system, as this
will enable the EKiBBO system to work.

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Farm Visits and Consultations:


• Conduct regular on-site visits to local farms to assess crop health, growth, and overall agricultural
practices.
• Conduct farmer registrations using a digital tool
• Update the EKiBBO Digital Farm Tool.
• Provide personalized advice and recommendations (in line with EKiBBO’s guidance documents) to
farmers for improving crop yields, disease management, pest control, and soil health.
• Support farmers in obtaining certification standards for Rainforest Alliance and Organic
certification.

2. Logistics:
• Facilitate logistical arrangements for the transportation of goods, in collaboration with other
extension workers and the Operations Manager.
• File all movements of crops in the EKiBBO digital farm system.
• Plan and conduct produce collection on collection days.

3. Upkeep of product storage facilities:


• Conduct weekly quality test of produce and update of stock cards
• Implement post-harvest quality control and management measures for the produce to ensure
produce quality maintenance while in storage.
• Ensure tidiness and cleanliness of the storage areas.
• Adherence to the designed HACCP plan and any certification standards as required.

4. Loans management:
• Coordinate and develop lists of loan requests by farmers
• Manage loan repayment structures with farmers
• Ensure full loan clearance by the farmers by the end of the loan term

5. Training and Workshops:


● Organize and lead workshops, training sessions, and seminars for farmers on organic, modern and
sustainable farming techniques, logistics and administration.
● Educate farmers on the proper use of fertilizers, pesticides, and other organic inputs, ensuring
adherence to safety and environmental guidelines.
● Coordinate farmer group leaders in mobilization for field activities.

6. Business Development:
• Support the Operations Manager and EKiBBO team in gathering information to be used for
proposal development or investment opportunities.
• Provide support to farmers in doing the analysis of what food security and income needs they
have, and what percentage of their produce is to be sold.
• Provide clear business opportunities to farmers in regards to crop diversification, quality
improvement and increased production in accordance with EKKiBO guidelines.
• Support farmers in the harvest and post-harvest process, including processing, transportation and
storage, as well as facilitating payments to the farmers in accordance with EKiBBO standards and
procedures.
• Support farmers to collect and monitor data required to access carbon credits, such as mapping
and tracking suitable trees, tracking farm-level carbon sequestration and using digital farm
technology in this process.
• Abide by any grant or funding requirements that are issued to EKiBBO, in collaboration with the
wider team.

7. Technology Adoption:
● Introduce farmers to innovative agricultural technologies, equipment, and practices that can
enhance productivity and efficiency.
● Assist in the implementation and adoption of new technologies, such as irrigation systems.
● Support farmers in the use of the digital tracking and information tools on their own devices.

8. Data Collection and Analysis:


● Collect data related to crop performance, yields, and other relevant metrics.
● Use data to identify trends, measure impact, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in
farming practices.
● Collect, enter and manage data on the EKiBBO digital farming tool.

9. Community Engagement:
● Foster strong relationships with local farming communities, understanding their needs and
concerns.
● Collaborate with community leaders and organizations to organize outreach programs and
initiatives.

10. Research and Development:


● Stay updated on the latest advancements in agriculture and crop management techniques.
● Contribute to the development of research projects aimed at enhancing crop quality and
sustainability.

11. Accountability
● Making accountability for finances received and or used
● Maintaining and keeping all receipts of all expenditures

12. Reporting:
● Maintain detailed and accurate records of farm visits, consultations, and training sessions by
updating it into the digital farming tool.
● Prepare regular reports summarizing activities, progress, and outcomes.

Qualifications:
● Diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agro-logistics, or related field (Bachelor's degree
preferred).
● Proven experience in agricultural extension, consulting, or related roles.
● Strong knowledge of coffee and cocoa cultivation and other EKiBBO crop value chains.
● Experience in Business development and/or logistics.
● Experience with and knowledge of carbon assessments is an added advantage.
● Ability to use Android applications. You will need to do polygon mapping and have strong IT and
smartphone skills.
● Fluent in the Luganda language
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Proficiency in data collection.
● Familiarity with modern farming technologies and practices, specifically with organic or bio
techniques and regenerative farming.
● Willingness to travel extensively to rural areas.
