Language Register

D. LESSON PROPER

Do you have any idea what is Language Register?

Language register is defined as the way the speaker

uses language differently in different circumstances.
Think about the words you choose, your tone of
voice, even your body language. You probably
behave very differently chatting with a friend than
you would at a formal dinner party or during a job
interview.

If I were to ask you, class do you use the same tone

of voice or the same speech style when talking to
your friends and your family?

Why?
Very good, we use different registers based on the
variety of situations.

Registers are determined by such factors as social

occasion, context purpose, and audience.

Aside from that, Registers are used in all forms of

communication, including writing, spoken, and
signed. Depending on grammar, syntax, and tone, the
register may be extremely rigid or very intimate. You
don’t even need to use an actual word to
communicate effectively. Sometimes just using
gestures as a way of communication is effective. Am
I correct class?

We, Filipinos love to do that right? We usually used

our lips to point out something and even raise our
eyebrows when we agree on something. Let me
guess you often use these gestures, right?

A huff of exasperation during a debate or a grin

while signing hello speaks volume (Nordquist,2018).

And when it comes to writing a letter, we use formal

style of writing and direct words in cover letters
while in love letters we usually write it full of
flowery and romantic words. Am I correct class?

Some linguists say there are just two types of

register: formal and informal. This is not incorrect,
but Nordquist (2018) considers this as an
oversimplification. Instead, most who study language
say there are five (5) distinct registers:

1. Frozen- This form is sometimes called the static

register because it refers to historic language or
communication that is intended to remain
unchanged, like a constitution or prayer.

Class could you give me an example of Frozen

register?
Very good! Law is a good example of Frozen.
Other examples are: Pledges, marriage ceremonies
and Romeo and Juliet.

2. Formal- less rigid, but still constrained, the formal

register is used in professional, academic or legal
setting where communication is expected to be
respectful, uninterrupted and restrained. Slang is
never used, and contractions are rare.

Before we proceed can someone tell me what does

slang and contractions mean in this statement?

Very good! Slang is very informal and typically

restricted to a particular context and group of people
while contraction is a word made by shortening and
combining two words like (can’t, don’t and I’ve).

It means in formal register slang is never used and

contractions are rare.

Can you give me an example of Formal register?

Very good those are the examples of Formal register!

Everyone, can you give him a power clap (Clap!
Clap! Clap!) Okay, thank you.
Another, examples are: Business presentation and
the Encyclopedia Brittanicca

Next, we have…

3. Consultative- This is used in semi-formal

communication. People use this register often in
conversation when they are speaking with someone
who has specialized knowledge or who is offering
advice. Tone is often respectful (use of courtesy
titles), but may be more casual if the relationship is
longstanding or friendly (a family doctor). Slang is
sometimes used. People may also pause or interrupt
one another.

Here are some examples: TV news broadcast, an

annual physical examination and regular classroom
discussion.

4. Casual- This is the register people use when they

are with friends, close acquaintances and co-workers,
and family. It is probably the one you think of when
you consider how you talk with other people, often
in a group setting. Use of slang, contractions and
vernacular grammar is all common, and people may
also use expletives, or off-color language in some
settings.
Could you give an example of Casual register class?

Very Good that’s a good example. Here are some

Examples: a birthday party and a phone call with a
friend.

5. Intimate- linguists say this register is reserved for

special occasions, usually between only two people
and often in private. Intimate language may be
something as simple as an inside joke between two
college friends or a word whispered in a lover’s ear.

Examples: family sharing ideas, couple conversation

E. GENERALIZATION

What is the way a speaker uses language differently?

Can you give me the 5 distinct registers?

Is it important to know these registers in our daily

lives?

Why?

Very good! Since you already know the Language

Register and the different types of it. Let’s have an
activity to identify if you really learn something
about our lesson for today.
