CVL420-W2025-Assignment 3-Torsion

The document outlines Assignment #3 for the course CVL 420: Strength of Materials II, which focuses on torsion and includes three questions related to torque, shear stress, and angle of twist in various bar shapes. The assignment is due on February 2, 2025, and requires calculations for maximum torque, shear stress limits, and factors of safety for different scenarios involving bars and shafts. Students are advised to be cautious about plagiarism while completing the assignment.

TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
CVL 420- STRENGTH OF MATERIALS II
Assignment # 3: Torsion
Available: January 21, 2025 Due: February 02, 2025

Question 1: (10 Marks)

A torque of T = 1900 Nm is applied to each of 0.015 rad, calculate the maximum torque,
the fixed supported bars as shown in Fig. 1. the bar can resist (assume b = 100 mm).
• Determine the dimension b if the shear stress
in each bar is the same.
• Also calculate the angle of twist for each bar
for the same length of 10m (G= 90 GPa).
• Which bar is effective- circular or
rectangular?
• If the shear stress and angle of twist in the
rectangular bar are limited to 60 MPa and

Question 2: (12 Marks)

A shallow crack has been located in a 200 mm-diameter shaft. The crack will be removed by turning
down a 400-mm length of the shaft surrounding the crack with a tool bit that has a 8-mm radius. If the
maximum shearing stress in the 8-mm fillet must be limited to 80 MPa and the diameter of the reduced
section is 120 mm, determine whether the reduced section is safe or not when the shaft is transmitting a
torque of 8 kNm. Find also the factor of safety.
• Repeat the problem if a groove of the same radius is inserted in the shaft system.

Question 3: (10 Marks)

The torsion member shown in Fig. 3(a) has the cross-sections shown in Fig. 3(b) and 3(c). If T2 = T1 =
6T and L1 = L2 = 1200 mm, determine the maximum torque that may be applied to the bar for each
cross-section, if the maximum shearing stress in the bar must be limited to 90 MPa. Find the maximum
shear stress and angle of twist of the member if it is made of solid circular sections having same solid
cross-sectional area as in cross-sections shown in Figure 3(b) and 3(c).
