Statement of Purpose for University of Melbourne

Shashank Kanakaraj

From a young age, I have always been inspired by how these man-made structures, help the
survival of humanity. This complex interaction between engineering and the environment has
always fascinated me. Driven by that curiosity, I am proud to say that I am close to completing
my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the BMS Institute of Technology and
Management. In college, I approached my projects and leadership roles intending to devise
solutions that could address societal problems for a better tomorrow.
I have always been eager to make steps towards more sustainable engineering practices. As an
undergraduate student, I had the opportunity to participate in the “Graphene-Enhanced Mortar”
project, which was focused on minimising seepage losses in the concrete mix along with
durability testing for the modified canal linings. With the idea of sustainability in mind, I was
able to design modular partition walls made from repurposed plastic during the P-BLOCKS
project. Having worked with Arduino for the “Smart Watering System” project, I quickly
realised how technology can be integrated into every facet of our lives, as it allowed me to
monitor the quality and the flow of water, which are key factors in preserving natural resources.
These projects have made me passionate about pursuing more sustainable engineering practices
in the future.
My work experience is in addition to what I was taught in school, as I gained practical
knowledge working with the National Highway Authority of India, on a large-scale
infrastructure project like the NHAI Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway. My training in survey
and town planning projects equipped me with tools such as Total Station, Theodolite, and
Esurvey CAD. Moreover, I also managed to achieve the position of Eco-Club Coordinator,
where I was responsible for leading programmes concerning sustainability on campus. I also
won the department-level project competition as a result of more innovative teamwork on my
part during my project planning.
Other social development goals, such as environmental sensitisation, also led to working on
exciting problems and coming up with new ones in my projects and during my internships.
Thus, I will focus more on innovation to integrate new technologies with environmental efforts.
I am looking forward to the fact that I can deepen my knowledge and skills by applying for
postgraduate studies. The works done by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)
during the Bengaluru-Chennai construction were quite large-scale, and my practical experience
has already complemented what was taught in school. My training for e-survey and town
planning projects included mastering tools like Total Station, Theodolite, and Esurvey CAD.
Additionally, I also reached the post of Coordinator of ECO-CLUB, where I was supervising
parameters concerning sustainability on the campus.
My decision to choose the University of Melbourne is firmly grounded in its unwavering
commitment to innovation, outstanding global reputation, and strong emphasis on
interdisciplinary research and learning. The Master of Construction Management program
offers an exceptional curriculum that seamlessly blends advanced technical knowledge with
strategic management principles, equipping graduates to oversee complex construction projects
in rapidly evolving industries effectively.

What particularly impresses me about this course is its strong focus on sustainable construction,
project risk management, and innovative delivery systems—the very issues I am determined to
engage with throughout my career. Most impressively, though, is the fact that this course
confronts real, modern challenges within the construction industry, particularly those
surrounding the integration of sustainability and new technologies into project management
practices. I am convinced that this program will provide the foundation to succeed in my chosen
career.
