Science Experiment

The document outlines an experiment for General Chemistry 2 aimed at demonstrating the concept of density using colored sugar-water solutions of varying concentrations. It details the materials needed, the step-by-step procedure for preparing and layering the solutions, and the expected observation of distinct layers based on density. The experiment involves using four beakers, food coloring, sugar, and water to create and layer the solutions.

General Chemistry 2

Experiment No. 1

Objective

To demonstrate the concept of density by layering colored sugar-water solutions of different

concentrations.

Materials Needed

 4 small beakers (or cups)

 1 graduated cylinder (150 mL or larger)
 Food coloring (red, blue, green, yellow)
 Sugar
 Water
 Stirring rods or spoons
 A pipette or syringe (optional, for layering precision)

Procedure

1. Prepare the Solutions

a. Label each beaker with its respective color: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow.
b. Measure 30 mL of water into each beaker.
c. Add sugar to each beaker in increasing amounts:
o Red: 1 tablespoon (15 g)
o Blue: 2 tablespoons (30 g)
o Green: 3 tablespoons (45 g)
o Yellow: 4 tablespoons (60 g)
d. Stir each solution thoroughly until all sugar is dissolved. If needed, slightly warm
the water to help dissolve the sugar, but ensure it cools before layering.
2. Add Food Coloring
a. Add 2-3 drops of red, blue, green, and yellow food coloring to their respective solutions.
Stir to mix.
3. Layer the Solutions
a. Begin with the densest solution (Yellow). Carefully pour about 10 mL into the graduated
cylinder.
b. Slowly layer the Green solution on top of the Yellow. Use a pipette or tilt the graduated
cylinder and pour gently down the side to avoid mixing.
c. Repeat the process with the Blue solution, followed by the Red solution.
4. Observe
o The solutions should form distinct layers, with the Yellow (densest) at the bottom and
Red (least dense) at the top.
