Chapter IV

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of the data gathered relative to

assessing the Effectiveness of Error Correction Techniques in the Use of Punctuation and

Capitalization in the English Writing of Grade 7 Students of Colegio del Santisimo Rosario,

Inc.

The following data was gathered from the respondents using validated test

questionnaires taken from the Grammarly site that correspond to the topic of this study.

Furthermore, the following data were analyzed, discussed, and interpreted in tabular and

textual form.

The effectiveness of the three (3) presented error-correction techniques in the use of

punctuation and capitalization in English Writing of Grade 7 Students in CSR was determined

using the average of each error-correction technique, as well as the mean scores of research

respondent. The researchers used the corresponding legend of the Department of Education

(DepED) to interpret the following data gathered.

Table 1 presents the pre-test result of grade 7 students in punctuation and


capitalization. Additionally, data shows that the overall score in error correction
techniques in punctuation and capitalization did not meet expectations at a transmuted
grade of 68%. Individually, the average score of the respondents in punctuation is
2.12 (TG; 65) which was interpreted as did not meet expectations. Moreover,
capitalization shows a better result in compare to punctuation, garnering an average
score of 4.58 (TG; 71) which was also interpreted as did not meet expectation.

Table 2.1 presents the post-test results of Grade 7 students on teacher-led


correction in punctuation and capitalization. The data indicates that there was an
improvement in capitalization compared to punctuation, although the overall
performance did not meet expectations. For punctuation, the average score was 3.21,
corresponding to a raw percentage of 32.08% and a transmuted grade of 68, which
was interpreted as "did not meet expectations." In contrast, capitalization showed a
better performance, with an average score of 7.17, a raw percentage of 71.67%, and a
transmuted grade of 82, which was interpreted as "satisfactory." However, the overall
performance, with an average score of 5.19, a raw percentage of 51.9%, and a
transmuted grade of 72, was still interpreted as "did not meet expectations."

Table 2.2 presents the post-test results of Grade 7 students on peer-correction in
punctuation and capitalization. The data reveals that, similar to the teacher-led correction,
punctuation did not meet expectations, while capitalization showed satisfactory
performance .For punctuation, the average score was 4.63, which corresponds to a raw
percentage of 46.25% and a transmuted grade of 71, interpreted as "did not meet
expectations." In capitalization, the students performed better, with an average score of 7.17,
a raw percentage of 71.67%, and a transmuted grade of 82, which was interpreted as
"satisfactory." The overall average score was 5.9, with a raw percentage of 59% and a
transmuted grade of 74, which was interpreted as "did not meet expectations."

Table 2.3 presents the post-test results of Grade 7 students on self-correction in


punctuation and capitalization. The data shows a notable improvement in capitalization,
which was rated as "outstanding," while punctuation still did not meet expectations. For
punctuation, the average score was 5.54, corresponding to a raw percentage of 55.42% and a
transmuted grade of 73, which was interpreted as "did not meet expectations." In contrast,
capitalization showed excellent results, with an average score of 8.63, a raw percentage of
86.25%, and a transmuted grade of 91, which was interpreted as "outstanding." The overall
average score was 7.08, corresponding to a raw percentage of 70.85% and a transmuted grade
of 81, which was interpreted as "satisfactory."
