CO1: Understand the concepts of stress and strain in simple and compound bars, the importance of principal stresses and principal planes.
CO2: Understand and applying the load transferring mechanism in beams and stress distribution due to shearing force and bending moment.
CO3: Apply the basic equation of simple torsion and analyzing the stresses in shafts and helical spring.
CO4: Evaluating the slope and deflection in beams using different methods.
CO5: Evaluating the buckling and crippling load of columns and Analyze and design thin and thick shells for the applied internal and external
pressures.

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11.a Estimate the values of change in length, breadth and thickness of a [BL3] [CO1] [13]
steel bar 4.2m long, 35mm wide and 25mm thick. When subjected to
an axial pull of 130kN in the direction of its length. Take E=200GPa
and poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

11.b A steel tube of 30 mm external diameter and 20 mm internal diameter [BL3] [CO1] [13]
encloses a copper rod of 15.5 mm diameter to which it is rigidly joined
at each end. If, at a temperature of 10⁰C there is no longitudinal

stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and the tube when the
temperature is raised to 200⁰C. Take Es = 2.1x105 N/mm2 and Ec =
1x105 N/mm2 Co-efficient of linear expansion 11x10-6 per ⁰C and
18x10-6 per ⁰C.

12.a A simply supported beam of 9 m span is as shown in figure given [BL3] [CO2] [13]
below. Draw the B.M and S.F diagram indicating principal values.

12.b A cantilever beam of length 2 m carries the point loads as shown in [BL3] [CO2] [13]

13.a A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 required to transmit 375 kW at [BL3] [CO3] [13]
100 rpm, the maximum torque being 20% greater than the mean. The
shear stress is not to exceed 60 MPa and the twist in a length of 4 m
not to exceed 2 degrees. Determine the diameter of the shaft.
Assume modulus of rigidity for the shaft material as 85 GN/m2.
OR
13.b The stiffness of a close-coiled helical spring is 1.5 N/mm of [BL3] [CO3] [13]
compression under a maximum load of 60 N. The maximum shearing
stress produced in the wire of the spring is 125 N/mm2. The solid
length of the spring (when the coils are touching) is given as 5 cm.
Find the diameter of wire, mean diameter of the coils and the number
of coils required.

14.a A beam is loaded as shown in the figure. Determine the deflection [BL3] [CO4] [13]
under the load points. Take E=200Gpa and I=160x 106mm4. Adopt
double integration method.

14.b A simply supported beam of 6 m span, subjected to a concentrated [BL3] [CO4] [13]
load of 50 kN at mid span Determine the maximum slope and
deflection. Take E=200 GPa and I=78x106 mm4.

15.a Using Euler's theory, derive the expression for the critical load of a [BL3] [CO5] [13]
column with one end fixed and the other end hinged.
OR
15.b A cylindrical vessel is 1.5 m diameter and 4 m long is closed at ends [BL3] [CO5] [13]
by rigid plates. It is subjected to an internal pressure of 3 N/mm 2. If
the maximum principal stress is not to exceed 150 N/mm2, find the
thickness of the shell. Assume E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 and Poisson's ratio
0.25. Find the changes in diameter, length and volume of the shell.

PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16.a Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for the following [BL3] [CO2] [15]
figure:

16.b A closely coiled helical spring made of 10 mm diameter steel wire [BL3] [CO3] [15]
has 15 coils of 100 mm mean diameter. The spring is subjected to
an axial load of 100 N. Calculate the maximum shear stress induced,
deflection and stiffness of the spring. Take modulus of rigidity, C =
8.16 x 104 N/mm2.
