STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
1. INTRODUCTION
1.2 The following details the scope of work undertaken as requested by AMC:
• Seafastening design
• Stability calculations
• Stowage plan
1.3 This report describes the methodology and the calculations performed for this
scope of work.

STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
2. METHODOLOGY
2.1.1 As per AMC’s instructions a stowage plan has been produced; the arrangement
is such that the C.O.G of DWPLEM is 10.49 meters from bow end and about
7.25 meters to the portside. In addition, there should be space for lashings and
where possible the grillage is located on at least one strong point of the vessel.
2.1.2 During discharge of the module, every effort should be made to align as much of
the grillage as possible with bulkheads, transverse frames and longitudinal
stiffeners.
2.2.1 It is intended that AMC will use lashings to secure the subsea module. The
lashings used for the “MARITIME EAGLE” will be 20 tonne lashings.
2.2.2 LGS have calculated the number of lashings required based on LOC guidelines,
which state that “for in harbour moves, the grillage and seafastenings should be
designed for additional loads arising from a force of at least 10% of the cargo
weight applied in any horizontal direction or vertically at the position of the
centre of gravity of the cargo”. As offshore operations are weather restricted it
is considered that this criterion is also adequate for the tow as long at the
motions of the barge are limited.
2.2.3 LGS have assumed that this loading takes account of all environmental effects
including wind loading.
2.2.4 The lashing points on the module are to be no higher than the lowest beam of
the module. Furthermore, all transverse lashings are to be provided at 90
degrees to the centreline and all longitudinal lashings are to run parallel to the
centreline.
2.2.5 Padeyes and D rings will need to be provided and should be welded in way of
strong points on the barge deck such as frames and bulkheads. These
connections should be welded at a distance at least 3m away from the base of
Our ref: LGS-C151-P147-R01 3
STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
the module to ensure that the lashing angle assumed in the design (35 degrees)
is not exceeded.
2.3.1 The class approved deck strength for the “MARINA EAGLE” is 15 tonnes/m².
LGS have checked the footprint of each grillage for the DWPLEM to determine
whether or not it exceeds the limit. It was found that the DWPLEM exceeds the
approved deck loading. Therefore deck strength has been investigated through
the modelling of the associated bulkheads using the programme STAAD Pro, as
discussed later.
2.4.1 LGS have performed both intact and damaged stability calculations for both
stowage arrangements using GHS software.
2.4.2 LGS have assumed a ballast distribution for the barge to maintain a suitable
draft, heel and trim in the intact condition. It is assumed that all empty tanks
may have non pumpable ballast and mud and so a 1% allowance is made for
this in all tanks.
2.4.3 Considering the small exposed wind area of the barge and cargo, wind heeling
calculations have not been considered necessary for intact or damage stability
calculations in this instance.

STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
3.1 The deck strength analysis is performed using the structural analysis computer
program STAAD Pro using a mix of two dimensional shell elements and one
dimensional beam elements. The analytical models contain shell elements for
the bulkheads, deck plate, and side shell. The deck beams, frames and
bulkhead stiffeners are modelled as beam elements connected to the deck or
bulkhead plating.
3.2 The vertical extents of the models are from the bottom of the hull to the top of
barge deck. The longitudinal extent of the model is formed from frame No.32 to
the bow end (Fr. No. 50). In transverse direction, it extends from port side to the
longitudinal bulkhead at 4.064 meters off centre line on starboard side.
3.3 The deck girders, webs, stiffeners and plate edges in longitudinal and
transverse direction are supported by sideshell, transverse bulkheads and
longitudinal bulkheads. At frame No. 32, plates and beams are fixed on the
edges.
3.4 For each of the load cases, STAAD calculates the membrane, shear and von
Mises stresses in the plate elements at the top and bottom of plate. For the
beams, it calculates the axial and shear forces and the bending moments. The
actual stresses are compared against the allowable stresses specified by AISC
to complete the utilization check.
3.5 The normal and shear membrane stresses in the bulkheads are used in
accordance with part 3 of the DNV Buckling Rules to determine the buckling
utilisation.

STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
4. RESULTS
4.2.1 LGS have calculated the number of 20 tonne lashings required for each side of
the module as follows. Details of this calculation may be found in Appendix B.
4.2.2 This number of lashings is suitable for a weather restricted tow offshore where
barge motions do not exceed 4 degrees roll.
4.2.3 Results of the calculations show that DWPLEM will not be subjected to uplift
during the operation.
4.3.1 Calculations shown in appendix C2 shows that the highest deck stress from
DWPLEM is 30.9 MPa. This is less than allowable von Mises stress, which is
211.5 MPa (calculated based on yield strength of mild steel).
4.3.2 Deck beams utilisation was checked against AISC requirement. The analysis
results show that deck beams are satisfactory with the design code
requirements. Detailed results can be found in appendix C2.
4.3.3 Although the deck strength is within limits, the subsea Module should be placed
on deck in such a way as to optimise the load distribution in to the barge
structure. This being said there is scope to relocate the Module on site to allow
for the practicalities of stowage and lashing.
4.3.4 The buckling analysis of the bulkhead was performed for DNV stresses and
allowable buckling. As the stress in longitudinal bulkhead was found higher
than that in transverse bulkhead, bulking check was only performed to the
longitudinal bulkhead. The results are shown in appendix C3 and summarised
below:
Our ref: LGS-C151-P147-R01 6
STOWAGE AND STABILITY OF “MARITIME EAGLE”
4.3.5 The results of the bulkhead buckling check show that all the buckling utilisations
are within the allowable stress range as defined in the Rules.
4.4.1 Draft, trim and heel of the “MARITIME EAGLE” have been corrected by
ballasting tanks 4A, 4B and 4C to 98% full (417 tonnes), and tanks 2C and 5B to
45% full (186 tonnes and 192 tonnes), respectively. This ballasting results in
the following drafts being attained:
4.4.2 Stability calculations performed using GHS provide the following results for the
intact and damaged stability of the loaded “MARITIME EAGLE”. Full details of
these calculations may be found in Appendix D.
