4STT211: DISTRIBUTION THEORY SEMESTER ONE 2023

ASSIGNMENT FOUR

DUE DATE: 12 April 2023 TOTAL MARKS: 50

1. There are two types of batteries in a bin. The lifetime of type 𝑖 battery is
an exponential random variable with parameter 𝜆𝑖 , 𝑖 = 1, 2. The
probability that a type 𝑖 battery is chosen from the bin is 𝑝𝑖 . If a
randomly chosen battery is still operating after 𝑡 hours of use, what is
the probability it will still be operating after 𝑠 hours? [10]

2. The random variable 𝑋 ha probability density function

𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 2 , 0 < 𝑥 < 1
𝑓(𝑥) = {
0, 𝑂𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
a) If 𝐸(𝑋) = 0.60, find constants 𝑎 and 𝑏. [4]
b) 𝑃(𝑋 < 0.5). [3]
c) 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑋). [3]
d) Find the cumulative distribution function, c.d.f of the random
variable 𝑋. [5]

3. It is known that the quantity Γ(𝛼) is known as the gamma function that

is equal to Γ(𝛼) = ∫0 𝑥 𝛼−1 𝑒 −𝑥 𝑑𝑥.
a) Show that Γ(𝛼 + 1) = 𝛼Γ(𝛼). [5]
b) Compute the value of Γ(5). [3]

4. You bet R1 on a specified number at a roulette table. A roulette wheel

has 38 slots, numbered 0, 00, and 1 through 36. Approximate the
probability that.

a) In 1000 bets you win more than 28 times. [3]

b) In 10000 bets you win more than 270 times. [4]

5. A parachutist lands at a random point on a line AB.

a) Find the probability that he is closer to A than to B. [4]

b) Find the probability that his distance to A is more than 3 times his
distance to B. [5]
6. The following table shows joint and marginal distributions for two
random variables 𝑋 and 𝑌 , with some entries missing. [10]

𝑋1 𝑋2 𝑝(𝑦)
𝑌1 0.50 ----- 0.60
𝑌2 ----- ----- -----
𝑝(𝑥) ------ 0.20 -----

7. (Bonus 13 Marks) A gambler can bet repeatedly on the occurrence of a

certain event, which is known to occur with probability 0.6, and returns
R2 for each R1 bet (for a profit of R1). Suppose that the gambler bets a
fraction 𝑏 of total funds each time, where 0 ≤ 𝑏 ≤ 1.

a) Write down a formula for the expected rate of growth of the gambler’s
funds. [4]
b) Find the value of b which maximizes this expected growth rate. [6]
c) Calculate the expected growth rate in this case. (Answer in three
decimal places). [3]
