A-ME201 Joints

The document discusses riveted joints, detailing two main types: lap joints, where one plate overlaps another, and butt joints, where plates align with cover plates riveted on. It also covers important terms related to riveted joints, potential failures, and the calculation of joint efficiency based on various permissible stresses. Additionally, it includes assignments for calculating the efficiency of specific riveted joint configurations.

Riveted Joints

Types of Riveted Joints

1 Lap joint: A lap joint is that in which one plate overlaps the other
Riveted Joints and the two plates are then riveted together.
2 Butt Joint: A butt joint is that in which the main plates are kept
in alignment butting each other and a cover plate is placed either

on one side or on both sides of the main plates. The cover plate is
then riveted together with the main plates.

Important Terms Used in Riveted Joints Failures of a Riveted Joint

1. Tearing of the plate at an edge:

Pitch, p: is the distance from the centre of one rivet to the centre
of the next rivet measured parallel to the seam.
Back pitch, pb : is the perpendicular distance between the centre
lines of the successive rows.
Diagonal pitch, pd : is the distance between the centres of the
rivets in adjacent rows of zig-zag riveted joint.
Marginal pitch, m: is the distance between the centre of rivet hole
to the nearest edge of the plate.
A012

This can be avoided by keeping the margin, m = 1.5d, where d is the

diameter of the rivet hole.

Efficiency of a Riveted Joint

Find the efficiency of the following riveted joints:

1 Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets
having a pitch of 50 mm. (Ans. η = 60.0%)
Pjoint = min(Pt , Ps , Pc )
2 Double riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets
having a pitch of 65 mm. (Ans. η = 69.2%)

Assignment

1 Two plates 16 mm thick are joined by a double riveted lap joint. The
pitch of each row of rivets is 90 mm. The rivets are 25 mm in diameter.
The permissible stresses are as follows:
σt = 140 MPa; τ = 110 MPa and σc = 240 MPa.
Find the efficiency of the joint. [53.5%]

2 A double riveted double cover butt joint is made in 12 mm thick

plates with 18 mm diameter rivets. Find the efficiency of the joint
for a pitch of 80 mm, if σt = 115 MPa; τ = 80 MPa and σc = 160
MPa. [62.6%]
