This document is an assignment for B. Tech. first-year students focusing on wave optics and the interference of light. It includes various questions and problems related to coherent light sources, thin film interference, Newton's rings, and calculations involving light wavelengths and film thicknesses. The assignment aims to deepen understanding of optical phenomena through theoretical explanations and practical applications.

ENGINEERING PHYSICS
ASSIGNMENT (Wave Optics: Interference of Light)

1. What do you mean by coherent sources of light? Why two coherent sources are required in
interference of light? What will be effect when two independent sources of light are used?

2. Discuss the phenomenon of interference of light due to thin film of uniform thickness in transmitted
light and derive necessary expressions.

3. Explain the formation of colours in thin films. Why an extended source is required to observe thin
film interference (explain with suitable diagram)?
4. Light of wavelength 5890Å falls on a thin glass plate (µ = 1.5) such that the angle of refraction in
plate is 60°. Calculate the minimum thickness of the plate so that the plate appears bright in the
reflected light. Ans.1.963x10-7m.
5. A thin film is illuminated by white light at an angle of incidence, i = sin–1 (4/5). In reflected light,
two dark consecutive overlapping fringes are observed corresponding to wavelengths
6.1 × 10-7 m and 6.0 × 10-7 m. µ for the film is (4/3). Find thickness of the film. Ans.1.72x10-5m.
6. Obtain an expression for the fringe width in a wedge-shaped thin film. Explain the nature of
interference pattern in the wedge-shaped thin film.

7. Two plane glass surfaces in contact along one edge are separated at the opposite edge by a thin
wire enclosing a thin air film. If 20 interference fringes are observed between these edges in
sodium light ( = 5893Å) at normal incidence, what is the thickness of the wire? Ans.58930A0.
8. Interference fringes are produced by monochromatic light falling normally on a wedge-shaped
thin film of refractive index 1.40. If angle of the wedge is 20 seconds of an arc and the distance
between successive fringes is 0.25 cm, compute the wavelength of light. Ans.6.790x10-5cm.
9. Derive an expression for the diameter of the nth dark rings in reflected monochromatic light.
Explain why the fringes in Newton’s ring experiment are called as the fringes of equal thickness.
10. What will happen in Newton’s ring experiment if (i) a liquid of refractive index µ>1 is introduced
in place of air between the glass plate and Plano-convex lens (ii) Plano-convex lens is lifted up
slowly from the flat glass surface (ii) a mirror is used in place of a glass plate in Newton’s ring
arrangement and (iii) white light is used in place of monochromatic light?
11. Discuss the formation of Newton’s rings in transmitted light.
12. Discuss Newton’s ring method to determine the wavelength of sodium light and refractive index of
a liquid.

13. Newton’s rings are observed in reflected light, with air film, of wavelength 6000Å. The diameter of
the 10th dark ring is 0.5 cm. Find the radius of curvature of the lens and the thickness of the
corresponding air film. Ans.104.16cm, 3x10-4cm.

14. In Newton’s rings experiment, the diameter of the 15th ring was found to be 0.590 cm and that of
the 5th ring was 0.336 cm. If the radius of the Plano-convex lens is 100 cm, compute the
wavelength of the light used. Ans.5880A0.
