LESSON 1:

EMTECH

WHAT I KNOW
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) often deals with
the use of different technologies such as mobile phones, telephones,
computer, Internet, and other devices, as well as software and
applications to locate, save, send, and manipulate information.
Empowering ICT is important for its innovative uses impacts our daily
lives. It has affected our ways of communicating, made our lives
more convenient, and assisted countries towards their modernization
plans. Thus, there is a need to create a foundation of understanding in the
world of ICT

ICT has greatly contributed to how easy our lives has been today. Our
gadgets have become part of our necessity that we check on them after
we wake up. It made communication easier. We can use cellular phones
that are designed for communicating with other people even they are
miles away from us. It has also assisted us in our work since there are
Internet-based jobs. It has revolutionized our education and in the
modernization of our economy.

ICT in the Philippines

Philippines is dub as the “ICT Hub of Asia” because of huge growth of
ICT- related jobs, one of which is BPO, Business Process Outsourcing, or
call centers. In a data gathered by the Annual Survey of Philippines
Business and Industries in 2010, the ICT industry shares 19.3% of the
total employment population. When the internet was fully
commercialized in 1995, it has tremendously impacted culture and
commerce, including the rise of near instant communication by email,
instant messaging, telephony (Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP),
two-way interactive video calls, and the World Wide Web with its
discussion forums, blogs, social networking, and online shopping sites.
Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that
uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to communicate between
networks and devices.
The World Wide Web
The World Wide Web is an information system on the Internet that
allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links,
enabling the user to search for information by moving from one
document to another. It was invented by Tim-Berners Lee. The World
Wide Web browser software, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer/Edge,
Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple's Safari, and Google Chrome, let users
navigate from one web page to another via the hyperlinks embedded in
the documents. These documents may also contain any combination of
computer data, including graphics, sounds, text, video, multimedia and
interactive content that runs while the user is interacting with the page.
The Web has enabled individuals and organizations to publish ideas and
information to a potentially large audience online at greatly reduced
expense and time delay.

Types of Web Pages

• Web 1.0 or The Web. It is the first stage of the World Wide Web
evolution. It is a flat or stationary page since it cannot be manipulated by
the user.
• Web 2.0 or The Social Web allows users to interact with the page, the
user may be able to comment or create a user account. Most website that
we visit
today are Web 2.0.
• Web 3.0 or Semantic Web. The semantic web provides a framework
that allows data to be shared and reuse to deliver web content specifically
targeting the user. Search Engine will learn about you and your habits
from each search you perform and will gather details about you from your
previous activities like likes and social postings and present the answers
as per your preferences.

1. Presentation or Visualization Platform allows you to present and share

presentations, infographics and videos with other people. It is used to
communicate information clearly and efficiently.
2. Cloud Computing Platform is also called as “The cloud.” It is the
practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet.
Instead of using your computer’s hard drive, you store and access your
data and programs over the Internet.
3. File Management Platform is used for the storing, naming, sorting, and
handling of computer files. Allows you to convert and manage files
without download in the software tool.
4. Mapping Platform is a transformation taking the points of one space
into the points of the same or another space. Uses GPS to detect location
and used for navigation.
5. Social Media Platform is a computer-mediated tools that allow large
group of people to create, share or exchange information, interest and the
information shared can be in the form of ideas, pictures, videos or
anything that you want to create and share to virtual communities. It can
be in the following platforms:
Social Networks. These sites allow you to connect with other people
with the same interests or background.
Bookmarking Sites. These are sites that allow you to store and manage
links to various websites and resources.
Social News. These are sites that allow users to post their own news
items or links to other news sources.
Media Sharing. These are sites that allow you to upload and share
media content like images, music, and video. Media sharing sites
can be specific for video sharing, photo sharing, slide sharing, social
bookmarking, and gaming.
Micro-blogging. These are sites that focus on short updates from
the user. Those subscribed to the user will be able to receive these
updates. Posts are brief that range typically from 140 – 200
characters.
Blogs and Forums. These are websites that allow users to post
their content. Other users can comment on the said topic

What is Information and Communication Technology or ICT?

•It deals with the use of different communication technologies such as
mobile phones, Internet and etc. to locate, save, send, and edit
information.

Having a unified way to communicate is one of the goals of ICT. We

spend less because of ICT.

World Wide Web

•The World Wide Web, commonly referred to as WWW, W3, or simply
the Web is an interconnected system of public web pages accessible
through the Internet. It was invented Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.
•Web pages are what make up the world wide web and it can
either be static or dynamic.

Web 1.0
•Web pages are static and not interactive. You can’t post comments or
create an account.

Web 2.0
•term used to describe the present generation of the World Wide Web that
concentrates on its capability of providing people the means to
collaborate and share information online.
•The second stage in World Wide Web
•Dynamic Website
•Interactive
•The user may be able to comment or create user account
•enables an increased user participation in the web
• Darcy DiNucci, an information architecture consultant, coined
the term Web 2.0 in her 1999 article,“Fragmented Future”.
• The term was popularized by TimO'Reilly and Dale Dougherty at
theO'Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference in late 2004 (TechTarget, 2015).

Features of Web 2.0

•Folksonomy -
It allows users to categorize and classify/arrange information using freely
chosen keywords (e.g., tagging). Popular social networking sitessuch as
Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. use tags that start with the poundsign
(#). This is also referred to as hashtag.
•Rich User Experience -
Content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input. An example would
be a website that shows local content. In the case of socialnetworking
sites, when logged on, your account is used to modify what yousee in
their website.
•User Participation -
The owner of the website is not the only one who is ableto put content.
Others are able to place a content of their own by means ofcomment,
reviews, and evaluation. Some websites allow readers to commenton an
article, participate in a poll, or review a specific product
(e.g.,Amazon.com, online stores).
•Software as a Service -
Users will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than
purchasing them. This is a cheaper option if you do not always need to
use a software. For instance, Google Docs is a free web-based application
that allows the user to create and edit word processing and spreadsheet
documents online. When you need a software, like a Word Processor, you
can purchase it for a one-time huge amount and install it
in your computer and it is yours forever. Software as a service allows you
to“rent” a software for a minimal fee.
•Mass Participation -
It is a diverse information sharing through universal web access. Since
most users can use the Internet, Web 2.0’s content is based on people
from various cultures.

Web 3.0
•also called as Semantic Web
•Semantics – ability of Web technologies to understand and interpret
human-generated content
• The aim of Web 3.0 is to have machines understand the user’s
preferences to be able to deliver web content specifically target
•The Internet is able to predict the best possible answers to your question
by“learning from your previous choices

Trends in ICT
As the world of ICT continues to grow, the industry has focused on
several innovations. These innovations cater to the needs of the people
that benefit most out of ICT. Whether it is for business or personal use,
these trends are current front runners in the innovation of ICT.

1.Convergence
•Technological convergence
is the combination of two or more different entities of technologies to
create a new single device.
•Example: Using of smartphone to create word documents that
waspreviously can only be created using desktop computer.
2.Social Media
•It is a website, application, or online channel that enables web usersto
create, co-create, modify, and exchange user-generated content.
•Types of Social media:
1.Social Networks
- sites that allow you to connect with other people with same interests or
background.Examples: Facebook, Google+.
2.Bookmarking Sites
- sites that allow users you to store and manage links to various websites
and resources, and to tag Examples: Stumble Upon, Pinterest.
3.Social News
- sites that allow users to post their own news
items or links to other news sources.Examples: reddit, dig.
4.Media Sharing
- sites that allow you to upload and share media content like images,
music, and video.Examples: Flickr, YouTube, and Instagram.
5.Microblogging
- sites that focus on short updates from the user. Those who are
subscribed will receive updates.Examples: Twitter Plurk
6.Blogs and Forums
- sites that allow users to post their content.Examples: Blogger, Word
Press, Tumblr

3.Mobile Technologies
• The popularity of smart phones and tablets has taken a major rise over
the years. This is largely because of the devices’ capability to do tasks
that were originally found in personal computers.
•Different types of mobile operating systems:
1.iOS –
used in Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad
2.Android –
an open source operating system developed by Google. Being open
source means several mobile phone companies use this OS for free.
3.Blackberry OS –
used in blackberry devices
4.Windows Phone OS –
a closed source and proprietary operating system developed by Microsoft
5.Symbian –
the original smart phone OS used by Nokia devices
6.WebOS
– originally used for smart phones; now used for smart TVs
7.Windows Mobile –
developed by Microsoft for smart phones and pocket PCs.

4.Assistive Media
•It is a nonprofit service designed to help people who have visual and
reading impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to
the user. You may visit http://assistivemedia.org/ f or several of their
audio recordings.

Information and communications technology or ICT is an important part

of Philippine economic growth. The Philippines is known as Asia's "ICT
Hub". When the Internet was created by Tim Berners-Lee, most of the
web pages were static, which are now called Web 1.0. A static Web page
is a page with content that cannot be manipulated by the user. On the
other hand, a dynamic web page, introduced in Web 2.0, is a page in
which its contents depend on the user or the website visitor.Web 2.0 has
many main features, including folksonomy, rich user interface, user
interaction, long tail services, web apps, and mass participation.
Folksonomy deals with information tagging; rich user experience deals
with how a site uses user information for a personalized content; user
participation means that those who view the website can also put their
own information; long tail services on demand as opposed to a one-time
purchase; software as a service contains how user would subscribe to a
software as opposed to purchasing them; and mass participation deals
with diverse information sharing through universal web access. Web 3.0
seeks to enhance Web 2.0 by implementing user-specific content through
user preferences.Nonetheless, Web 3.0 implementation is hindered by
several issues, namely compatibility, security, vastness, vagueness, and
logic. The trends in ICT include convergence, social media, mobile techn
ologies, and assistive learning

LESSON 2: Online Safety, Security and Netiquette

Online safety refers to the practices and precautions that should be

observed when using the internet to ensure that the users as well as their
computers and personal information are safe from crimes associated with
using the internet. Below are personal information that must be kept
confidential.
