Ex 1 Specific Gravity

The document outlines a laboratory experiment for determining the specific gravity of an unknown liquid using a U-tube. It includes objectives, materials, apparatus, theoretical background, detailed procedures for two methods of measurement, and computation formulas. The experiment aims to compare results from both procedures to ensure accuracy.

Laboratory Experiment No. 1
DETERMINATION OF THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF LIQUID USING U-TUBE

OBJECTIVE
To determine the specific gravity of an unknown liquid using the principles of
pressure in a U-tube

MATERIALS
Liquid of unknown specific gravity
Distilled water
Kerosene
Meter stick

APPARATUS
Plastic or Glass U-Tube on stand
Measuring stick
Thermometer
Funnels

THEORY
The pressure head at any given point is equal to the sum of the pressure heads
of the liquids above or below the point expressed in terms of a single liquid. Pressure
head is positive when going down and negative when going up

PROCEDURE
Procedure A:
1. Pour about 5 cubic centimeters of water in a U-tube
2. Pour an amount of liquid with unknown specific gravity in one end of the tube
3. Remove the trapped air inside the U-tube by tapping
4. Measure the difference in liquid level of each liquid

Procedure B:
1. Pour about 5 cubic centimeters of water in a U-tube
2. Pour an amount of unknown liquid in one end of the U-tube
3. Pour an amount of kerosene in the other end of the tube
4. Remove the trapped air inside by tapping
5. Measure the difference in liquid level of each liquid
6. Recheck the value obtained in procedure A by using Procedure B
COMPUTATIONS

Procedure A:
h1 × ( s . g .of unknown liquid ×9.81 )=h2 ( 9.81 )
where:
h1=¿ height of liquid of unknown specific gravity above the water surface
h2 =¿ height of water in one leg of the tube (measured from the lower level
of water on the other end)

Procedure B:
h1 × ( s . g .of unknown liquid ×9.81 )−h2−h3=0
where:
h1=¿ height of liquid of unknown specific gravity above the water surface
h2 =¿ height of water in one leg of the tube (measured from the lower level
of water on the other end)
h3 =¿ height of kerosene in one leg of the tube (measured above the water
surface on that end)
TABULATED DATA

Group Name Liquid s.g. (A) s . g . (B) %E
