MHM420 2015 Test 1

The document is a test for the course MHM420/MHM780 on Advanced Heat and Mass Transfer, consisting of four questions related to heat transfer phenomena. It includes problems on condensation under a vertical plate, thermoregulation in humans, boiling experiments with a copper bar, and condensation rates on a vertical plate exposed to steam. The test is closed book, allowing only an equation sheet, and has a total of 30 marks with a time limit of 90 minutes.

MHM420/MHM780- ADVANCED HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

August 2015
Test 1

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Time: 90 minutes
2. Full marks: [30]
3. Answer all the questions
4. Closed books and closed notes
5. Only a sheet of paper with equations is allowed
6. The equation sheet must to be submitted with the answers of the problems

QUESTION 1 [5]

Consider condensation under a vertical plate. Make a drawing of the liquid film and write the
boundary conditions for velocity and temperature.

QUESTION 2 [14]

Humans are able to control their heat production rate and heat loss rate to maintain a nearly constant
core temperature under a wide range of environmental conditions. This process is called
thermoregulation. From the perspective of calculating heat transfer between a human body and its
surroundings, we focus on a layer of skin and fat, with its outer surface exposed to the environment
and its inner surface at a temperature slightly less than the core temperature, Ti=35oC=308K. Consider
a person with a skin/fat layer of thickness L=3 mm and effective thermal conductivity k=0.3 W/mK.
The person has a surface area a=1.8m2 and is dressed in a bathing suit. The emissivity of the skin is
  0.95 .

a) Make a drawing with all the heat interactions present in this phenomenon.

b) Considering a person who is in still air a T with skin surface temperature Ts ,show that h

 1 
can be written as h  (C 0 Ts4  C1Ts  C 2 )  where h is the convection heat
 T  Ts 
transfer coefficient to the air and C0, C1 and C2 are constant function of properties of the skin,
T and Ti.

c) Considering T  297K and Ts  297K , calculate the value of h, C0, C1 and C2.

d) When the person is in water at T  297K , what is the skin surface temperature and heat
loss rate? Heat transfer to the water is characterized by a convection coefficient of h=
200W/m2K.

QUESTION 3 [5]

A device for performing boiling experiments consists of a copper bar (k = 400 W/mK), which is
exposed to a boiling liquid at one end, and is well insulated from its surroundings at all but the
exposed surface. Thermocouples inserted in the bar are used to measure temperatures at distances of
x1= 10 mm and x2 = 25 mm from the surface. An experiment is performed to determine the boiling
characteristics of a special coating applied to the exposed surface. Under steady-state conditions,
nucleate boiling is maintained in saturated water at atmospheric pressure, and values of T1 = 133.7oC
and T2=158.6oC are recorded.

a) Find qs.

b) Find an expression of temperature as function of position x inside of the copper bar.

c) Find Ts.

c) If n=1, what value of the coefficient Cs,f is associated with this experimental configuration?

QUESTION 4 [6]

A vertical plate 2.5 m high, maintained at a uniform temperature of 54 oC, is exposed to saturated
steam at atmospheric pressure. Consider turbulent flow and film temperature Tf =75oC.

a) Calculate the condensation rate per unit width of the plate.

b) Calculate heat transfer rates per unit width of the plate.

c) If the plate height were halved, would the flow regime stay the same or change?
