End Semester Examination, December 2018
MES — 211: Engineering Mathematics — III
Date: 30-11-2018
Time: 3 hrs. Max Marks: 60

1. (a) Solve by Charpit's method 2xz— px2 —2qxy+ pq = 0 (5)

(b) The temperature distribution in a bar length TC which is perfectly insulated at ends is
au a2u
given by = assuming that the initial ;temperature distribution as 4x, t) = sin 2x .
at ax 2
Find the temperature distribution at any time. (5)
2. (a) Use the method of Frobenius to find solutions of the differential equation
2x2y"—xy'+(x2 —3)y = 0 in some interval 0 < x — xo < R (6)
(b) If a and are positive roots of J „(x) = 0 then show that

0, if a

3. (a) Find the Fourier cosine transform of (5)

a2u
(b) Using Fourier transform, solve —
au = 2 if, 40,0= 0, 4x, o) = e' (x > 0), and
at ax
u(x,t)is bounded where x > 0, t > 0. (5)
4. (a) Three machines El, E2, and E3 in a certain factory produce 50%, 25% and 25%,
respectively, of the total daily output of electric tubes. It is known that 4% of the tubes
produced one each of machines El and E2 are defective, and that 5% of those produced on
E3 are defective. If one tube is picked up at random from a day's production calculate the
probability that it is defective. (5)
(b) A patrol pump is supplied with petrol once a day. If its daily volume of sales (X) in
thousands of liters is distributed by: f (x) = x)4 for 0 x 1 .What must be the
capacity of its tank in order that the probability that its supply will be exhausted in a
given day shall be 0.01? (5)
5. (a)' Let X and Y are jointly distributed with probability density function given below.
Show that X and Y are not independent but X2 and Y2 are independent.

(1. + xy) for lxl < 1, lyl <1

./(x, Y1= 4 (5)

(b) Let (X, Y) be a two-dimensional non-negative continuous random variable having the
joint density given below. Find the density function of U =11712 + Y2 (5)
4xy d' 2" 2) for x.0,y?..0
f (x, Y)=
0 elsewhere
6. (a) Prove that probability mass' funaion of Poisson distribution is a limiting case of
Binomial distribution. (4)
(b) A multiple choice test consists of 8 questions with 3 answers to each question (of
which only one is correct). A student answers each question by rolling a balanced die and
checking the first answer if he gets 1 or 2, the second answer if he gets 3 or 4 and the
third answer if he gets 5 or 6. To get a distinction, the student must secure at least 75%
correct answers. If there is no negative marking, what is the probability that the student
secures a distinction? (4)
