FUNCTIONAL DESIGN FOCUSES ON OPTIMIZING SPACES TO SUPPORT THE DAILY ACTIVITIES AND
WELL-BEING OF THE OCCUPANTS. IT BLENDS PRACTICALITY, EFFICIENCY, AND AESTHETICS TO CREATE
INTERIORS THAT ARE NOT JUST VISUALLY APPEALING BUT ALSO HIGHLY USABLE.

THE FUNCTIONALITY DESIGN PRINCIPLE IS THE IDEA THAT DESIGNS SHOULD BE FUNCTIONAL
AND CAPABLE OF FULFILLING THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE. THIS MEANS THAT DESIGNERS SHOULD FOCUS
ON CREATING DESIGNS THAT ARE PRACTICAL, EFFECTIVE, AND ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE USER.
THE FUNCTIONALITY DESIGN PRINCIPLE IS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE PRINCIPLE OF SIMPLICITY, AS
DESIGNS THAT ARE FUNCTIONAL ARE OFTEN ALSO SIMPLE AND EASY TO USE.

EMPHASIS IS WHERE THE FOCAL POINT OF THE DESIGN IS AND WHERE THE EYE IS DRAWN,
USINGPROPORTION, PLACEMENT, SHAPE, COLOR, AND MATERIALS. YOUR DOMINANT ELEMENT IS THE
STARTING POINT FOR THE STORY YOU’RE TELLING. IT’S THE ENTRY POINT INTO YOUR DESIGN.
UNITY
UNITY IS A MORE COMPLEX PRINCIPLE THE HARMONY CREATED BY THE RATIONAL BALANCE
BETWEEN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THE NATURAL ORDER AND GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE
DESIGN PRINCIPLE OF BALANCE. THIS ESTABLISHES AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN ELEMENTS SOTHAT NO
INDIVIDUAL ELEMENT IS VIEWED AS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE DESIGN AS A WHOLE.
BALANCE
BALANCE IS A MAJOR DESIGN PRINCIPLE USED TO ACHIEVE VISUAL HARMONY AND STABILITY IN
ARCHITECTURE.IT IS THE ART OF MIXING CLASSIFICATIONS OF WEIGHTS, COLORS, TEXTURE, AND
OBJECTS TO GENERATE A SENSE OF STABILITY. BALANCE PROVIDES STABILITY AND STRUCTURE TO A
DESIGN BY PLACING THE ELEMENTS IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE VISUAL WEIGHT, IN TERMS OF OBJECTS,
COLORS AND TEXTURES.
CONTRAST
CONTRAST IS WHEN DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF DESIGN ARE TREATED WITH VARYING LEVELS
OF PUNCTUATION, EMPHASIS, OR HIGHLIGHT TO ACCENT A PARTICULAR FEATURE. CONTRAST CAN
COME FROM LIGHT AND SHADOWS, COLOR CHOICES, TEXTURES, SCALE, OR MATERIALS USED IN THE
DESIGN OF A BUILDING. BY CONTROLLING CONTRAST TO INTENSIFY OR REDUCE THESE VISUAL
INGREDIENTS, ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS CAN DIRECT ATTENTION TO SPECIFIC POINTS WITHIN THE
STRUCTURE OR CREATE HARMONY BETWEEN VARIOUS SECTIONS. THIS WAY, CONTRAST DEFINES A
STRUCTURE’S LOOK WHILE ALSO GIVING VIEWERS SOMETHING FUN TO EXPLORE.
MOVEMENT
MOVEMENT IS HOW THE DESIGN LEADS A VIEWER’S EYES THROUGH THE EXTERIOR AND
INTERIOR OF A BUILDINGCOMPOSITION, GUIDED BY PATTERNS OR OTHER DESIGN ELEMENTSTHIS IS
THE VISUAL FLOW OR PATH TAKEN BY THE OBSERVER’S EYE. IT CAN BE DIRECTED TO FOCAL AREAS BY
MEANS OF PLACEMENT OF DARK AND LIGHT AREAS, AND POSITIONING. MOVEMENT CAN BE DIRECTED
BY THE USE OF LINES, EDGES, SHAPES AND COLORS.
RHYTHM
MUCH LIKE MUSIC, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CAN ALSO ESTABLISH A RHYTHM THROUGH
REPETITION OF FORMS, COLORS, AND PATTERNS. RHYTHMS IS THE INTENTIONAL VARIATION OF DESIGN
ELEMENTS THAT OFFER THE VIEWER A SENSE OF REPEATING VISUALS.

path taken by the
observer’s eye. It can be
directed to focal areas by
means of placement of dark
and light areas, and
positioning. Movement can
be directed by the
use of lines, edges, shapes
and colors.

Much like music,
architectural design can
also establish a rhythm
through repetition of forms,
colors, and patterns.
Rhythms is the intentional
variation of design
elements that offer the
viewer a sense of repeating
visuals.

SMOOTHLY THROUGH A SPACE.
BEFORE WE GET INTO WHY IT IS IMPORTANT THAT FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION, LET US
UNDERSTAND WHAT EXACTLY THE MEANING OF FUNCTION IS IN INTERIOR DESIGN. THE FUNCTION
ESSENTIALLY MEANS LAYING OUT THE OPEN-PLAN CLEARLY ACCORDING TO THE INTENDED
FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PLACE RATHER THAN FOCUSING JUST ON AESTHETICS OR ORNAMENTATION.
