Practical Investigation 2

(Acids and Bases)


NATURAL SCIENCE

GRADE 7

Time: 60 Minutes

Instructions:
 Conduct the following investigation before answering the
questions.
 Please ensure that you do not taste any of the substances in the
laboratory.
 Work neatly and tidy.

Aim: To determine how litmus paper and red cabbage juice indicator
responds to some household acids and bases.
Hypothesis: Write down your hypothesis (prediction for this investigation)

Materials and apparatus needed:


 Test tubes or empty yoghurt containers for each of the following
substances:
 Water
 Dishwashing liquid
 Baking soda (1 tablespoon dissolved in a cup of water)
 Handy Andy (1 tablespoon dissolved in a cup of water)
 Aspirin (1 tablespoon dissolved in a cup of water)
 Lemon Juice
 Vinegar
 Milk
 Toothpaste (1 tablespoon dissolved in a cup of water)

 Litmus paper (blue and red)


 Red cabbage juice indicator
 Plastic spoons

Method:
1. Cut 1cm strips of the red and blue litmus paper for each substance you will
be testing.
2. Use the plastic spoon to put one drop of water on the blue litmus paper .

3. Do the same thing with the red litmus paper. observe if the litmus papers
changes colour
4. Record your results in the table.
5. Now add 1 teaspoon of the red cabbage juice indicator to the test tube of
water.
6. Write down your observation in the table of results.
7. Repeat the procedure (step 2 – step 6) for each of the substances you have
been given. Make sure you use a clean spoon each time.
