Galileo Galilei was the first scientist to use a telescope to study the
space and, when he looked at Jupiter, in 1610, he discovered four large
moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. We call these four large

3
moons the Galilean Moons. Today we know that Jupiter really has 67
moons (possibly more), but the largest are the Galilean ones.
Io is the third largest of Jupiter’s moons; it’s a little larger
than the Earth’s moon. Io is a very violent place in a
dangerous part of Jupiter’s magnetic field. The radiation
in this area can kill a human immediately.

Io’s surface is full of giant volcanoes which erupt with extreme

frequency.
Europa is a cold, plane, ice covered world. Scientists believe
that Europa’s center is hot and that, under the ice, there is a
liquid ocean of warm water. It makes scientists think that
Europa is the most probable place for life in the Solar
System, apart from the Earth.

Scientists think that, like in Europa, Ganymede has a liquid

water ocean under its icy exterior. Ganymede is the largest
of Jupiter’s moons. It is larger in diameter than both the
planets Mercury and Pluto.

Callisto is the eighth moon from the surface of Jupiter, and the
second largest. Callisto is almost the same size as the planet
Mercury.

8 Why are these moons the “Galilean Moons”?

A. Because Jupiter has more than sixty seven moons.

B. Because these four moons are the largest moons in Jupiter.
C. Because Galileo was the first scientist to watch these moons.

9 Humans cannot live in Io

because A. it is larger than the

Earth’s moon.

B. there is much radiation on its surface.

C. it is the third largest of Jupiter’s moons.

4
10 In which moon scientists think there is life?

A. Jupiter. B. Callisto. C. Europa.

11 The largest moon in Jupiter is

A. Io. B. Ganymede. C. Callisto.

12 The moon that has more or less the same size as the closest planet to the
sun is

A. Callisto. B. Europa. C. Ganymede.
