HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and Earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell;

On the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

PRESENTATION: STEAL AWAY Wallace Willis, arr. Patrick Dupré Quigley

Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!

Steal away, steal away home; I ain’t got long to stay here.

Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!

Steal away, steal away home; I ain’t got long to stay here.

My Lord, He calls me; He calls me like the thunder.

The trumpet sounds within a my soul;I ain’t got long to stay here.
Green trees are bending and sinners stand a-trembling.
The trumpet sounds within my soul. I ain’t got long to stay here.

Steal away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!

Steal away, steal away home; I ain’t got long to stay here.

The words and music were created by Wallace Willis, a slave who became
a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory of what is now Oklahoma.
Alexander Reid, a minister at the Choctaw Boarding School, heard Willis singing
the song in 1862 and transcribed the words and melody. He sent the music to the
Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, who popularized the
song such an extent that it became a standard Gospel song found in the hymnals
of many Protestant denominations today.

COMMUNION: FAR BEYOND Liam Lawton, arr. Gary Fry
Refrain

1. I am thirsting, I am blind, I am stumbling, hear my cry,

I am lonely, filled with fear. I am thirsting, I am thirsting,
Who will quench this thirst for me? (To Refrain.)

2. I am silent, all alone, I am orphaned, without home;

I am no one, can this be? I am weeping, I am weeping,
Who will dry my tears for me? (To Refrain.)

3. I am sister, I am son, I am family, I am one,

I am stranger, shall it be? I am pleading, I am pleading,
Who will calm my cries for me? (To Refrain.)
8
WERE YOU THERE? Trad. Spiritual

1. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

2. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

3. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

PIETA: THE SILENCE AND THE SORROW Liam Lawton

Refrain

1. When I was young, I dreamed of roads not taken,

To walk the way so many had forsaken,
And I would seek the heart of love’s creation: It was found in you.

2. When I was young, I cried with tears of laughter
And deep inside I wondered what came after,
How a heart could love without conditions – It was found in you.

3. When love was young and living seemed forever,

I knew somehow you never hid its pleasure,
And all my tears uncovered hidden treasures - Love was found in you.
