Electrotile - Quekry Mind

The project report discusses the innovative use of electro tiles to convert mechanical energy from human movement into electrical energy, particularly in high-traffic areas. The system utilizes a mechanical setup with a stepper motor to generate low-voltage electricity, which can power small devices or contribute to the energy grid. This sustainable solution aims to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources by harnessing the vast potential of human locomotion.

PROJECT REPORT: ELECTROTILE

INTRODUCTION
The concept of using electro tiles to harness energy from human movement is
an innovative approach to addressing energy inefficiency. By replacing
traditional tiles with electro tiles, the mechanical energy generated from
footsteps can be converted into electrical energy. This system can be
particularly useful in densely populated areas like India and China, where large
numbers of people move daily through places like roads, railway stations, bus
stands, temples, and other crowded spaces.
The idea is that each footstep on the electro tiles generates a small amount of
energy. This energy is typically in the form of low-voltage DC power, which can
be used to power low-energy devices or contribute to the local energy grid. For
example, a person walking on the tiles could generate enough energy to power
lighting systems or charge small devices. The idea of combining this energy
generation with activities such as exercise on treadmills or in gyms is also a fun
and health-conscious way to generate power.

The system's potential extends to various locations, including shopping centers,

dance floors, and stairways, where constant human movement can be
harnessed to produce energy. According to research, approximately 11% of
global energy can be sourced from non-conventional means, such as human
locomotion. With people taking millions of steps daily, the system could tap
into this vast, untapped energy source.
While the energy output is relatively low—enough for small devices or low-
power equipment—it presents a sustainable, eco-friendly solution for
generating electricity in high-traffic areas, contributing to the broader goal of
reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.
COMPONENTS AND METHODOLOGY
1.Mechanical Setup
The device is built like a sturdy box or platform that people can step or jump
onto. Inside, you can see coils, springs, or a small motor assembly. When
someone steps or jumps on the top surface, the vertical force moves part of
the internal mechanism (for example, compressing springs or pushing a rod).
2. Using a Stepper Motor as a Generator
A stepper motor can also function as a small generator if you manually rotate
its shaft. In many footstep-power prototypes, stepping causes a gear, lever, or
rack-and-pinion mechanism to spin the stepper motor shaft momentarily. The
rotating stepper motor then produces an AC voltage on its output wires (since
inside it has coils that generate electricity when the rotor spins).
3. Electrical Output
The electricity generated is typically low voltage, AC (depending on how fast
and how far the motor shaft turns). The wires you see (connected to the motor
or coils) would lead to a small circuit that rectifies (converts AC to DC) and
possibly regulates the voltage. The energy can then be stored in a capacitor or
battery, or it can power a small load (like LEDs, a charging port, or a sensor).
4. Purpose of Springs / Frame
The springs or other mechanical components in the box help:
Absorb impact from the jump or step, Potentially store some mechanical
energy briefly, and Make the platform return to its original height/position so
it’s ready for the next footstep.
5. Why a Stepper Motor?
Stepper motors are sometimes used in DIY energy-harvesting projects because:
They have multiple internal coils and can produce a usable voltage even at
relatively low RPM. They’re easier to find salvaged from printers, scanners, or
3D printers. They’re fairly robust and can generate power in both directions of
motion.

CONCLUSION
Someone steps or jumps on the tile.
The downward force pushes a rod/lever/gear that rotates the stepper motor’s
shaft. As the shaft spins, the stepper motor generates an electrical output (AC).
The output is wired to a circuit that may rectify, regulate, or store the
generated energy. The tile is then reset (springs push it back up), ready for the
next footstep.
In short, this box is converting mechanical energy (your jump or step) into
electrical energy via the internal stepper motor acting as a generator. The
springs and frame keep everything aligned and make the platform sturdy.
