Fiqure (35): Design Steel Column…………………………………… ……………………..55

1. Introduction

Structural design is the systematic examination of the stability, quality, rigidity and strength of
structures. The main objective in structural design analysis and analysis is to produce a structure
equipped for opposing every connected load without failure during its planned life. The primary
purpose of a structure is to support or transmit loads. If the structure is improperly fabricated or
designed, or if the actual applied loads exceed the design specifications, the device will fail to
perform its intended function, with possible serious consequences. Engineered structure who is
well can greatly minimizes a possibility of costly failures. To increase the safety of structure,
need to increase the cost

This structural design includes two things of design, steel design and RCC design where one way
is or be two way by using calculations... The Grade of concrete is 3 and variable load is 3.25 for
RCC. And permanent loads is 2.6 and for variable load is 2.7 for steel.

This course work will include to design elements of Building in RCC and steel for. In first task
include design RCC of slab, beam and column for a staff lounge for MEC college and its kitchen
which is inside the hall. In second task will design for beams and columns of house of MEC
College chairman parking garage. A main objective of this project to learn how to design by
using techniques of analysis and tools to design structural elements for both reinforcements of
steel structural elements and concrete design elements. Otherwise, to know the ability of
structure to be stability and the behavior of its under different magnitude of loads conditions.

Task (1) :- RCC Design for slab , Beam, Column.

1. Design for a staff lounge Room.

Design a staff lounge for MEC College which is having size of (7.6 m x 3.45) m and kitchen
(1.4x1.45m) in plan as shown in figure. Height of hall is H m, which is having the elements of the
building like beams, slab and columns. Your tasks is to analysis and designs the each elements of
the building as given below and present the Design calculation by using European code of practices,
along with Structural detailing with Grade of concrete C & Steel ƒyk=500 in RCC. Assume any
other suitable date if necessary. Consider the Variable load as q kN/mm2. Design the following
elements

A] Design of slab

B] Design of Beam

C] Design of Column

7
Figure (1):- A staff lounge for MEC College with kitchen

11

 First, determine the type of slab by calculate the aspect ratio:

7
22

2.2 > 2  so, the slab considered as one way slab.

Figure (2): Slab a staff lounge for MEC College (One way)

 Second step: consider that % of steel slab is from 0.13% AC To 4% AC, so estimate, the
overall, depth of slab, assume the reinforcement ratio (ρ) as 0.35%, so for simply supported
slab the basic span/ effective depth ratio is:

8

11 1 √ 2√ 1

1 11 1 √2 (5 ×10-3) / (3.5 ×10-3) 2√2 1

Will take the shorter span to determine the effective depth and Assume the width of room which
given is 3450 mm as effective width of span.

When d = 111.67 mm, then:

Area = = = 78.5 mm2

So, the No of bar is:

So, AS1 Req = 11 8 mm2

 AS1 Provided =Area of bar * No of bar

1.4. Design of the Column

 Consider the load act at the center of the column excatlly.

 2 m2
 m2
 Weight of slab acting on column C1 = weight of full slab /4
GK for slab = 3.53 kN/m2 , Area = 7.6 x 3.45= 26.22 m²
N1 (slab) = 3.53 x = 23.13 KN

 N2 (Long beam) = 275 x 420 x 25 x = 10972500 N/mm2 10.9 KN/m²

 N3 (short beam) = 275 x 420 x 25 x = 498093N/mm2 4.98 KN/m²

 Total load acting on column N = N1 + N2 + N3= 23.13+10.9+4.98 = 39.01 KN 9 1

 Assume the column dimensions as 250 x 250 mm.

 = = 0.024 (from the table 3.31 for the longitudinal

reinforcement in braced rectangular columns with axial load) gives =0

which is not possible.

 2
22
 2 2

 = 2.2 % of the Area of column (Ac)

Assume

= 2.5 x (250 x 250) =156250 mm2 = =1562.5 mm2

Assume 1

 A= ( )= (1 ) = 201.06

 NO of bar = = 7.7 ≈ 8 bar

 Total of area = 8 × 201.06

= 1608

27
 Provide = 1610

Hence; provide 8H16 ( = 1610 mm2) from table (3.10).

 Design of links for columns

1. 6 mm = 6 mm , hence diameter of links = 6 mm
2. ¼ the main diameter = 16/4 =4 mm
Diameter of main steel reinforcements =16mm, 16/4 = 4mm< 6mm therefore provide
6mm dia links
 Design of spacing for links

Diameter of links is the least of below three conditions:

1. Diameter of main steel reinforcements x 20 =20*16 =320mm.

2. Least lateral dimension = 250 mm
3. 400 mm spacing

4. Therefore provide 250 mm spacing between links c/c

1.5. Design of the Column

 Consider the load act at the center of the column excatlly.

 2 m2
 m2
 Weight of slab acting on column C1 = weight of full slab /4
GK for slab = 3.8 kN/m2 , Area = 1.45 x 1.4=2.03 m²
N1 (slab) = 3.8 x = 1.928 KN

 N2 (Long beam) = 200 x 250 x 25 x = 906250 N/mm2 0.9 KN/m²

 N3 (short beam) = 200 x 250 x 25 x = 875000N/mm2 0.87 KN/m²

 Total load acting on column N = N1 + N2 + N3= 1.928+0.9+0.87 = 3.628 KN 28

 Assume the column dimensions as 200 x 200 mm.

 = = 0.0036 (from the table 3.31 for the longitudinal

reinforcement in braced rectangular columns with axial load) gives =0

which is not possible.

 2
22
 2 2

 = 2 % of the Area of column (Ac)

= 2 x (200 x 200) =80000 mm2 = =800 mm2

Assume 1

 A= ( )= (1 ) = 201.06

 NO of bar = = 3.9 ≈ 4 bar

 Total of area = 4× 201.06

= 804.36

 Provide = 804

Hence; provide 4H16 ( = 804 mm2) from table (3.10).

 Design of links for columns

3. 6 mm = 6 mm , hence diameter of links = 6 mm
4. ¼ the main diameter = 16/4 =4 mm
Diameter of main steel reinforcements =16mm, 16/4 = 4mm< 6mm therefore provide
6mm dia links
 Design of spacing for links

Diameter of links is the least of below three conditions:

5. Diameter of main steel reinforcements x 20 =20*16 =320mm.

6. Least lateral dimension = 200 mm
7. 400 mm spacing

8. Therefore provide 200 mm spacing between links c/c

6. Conclusion

Finally, learned from these course work analysis that, to make the structure more safety as much as
possible, need to increase the cost. And provide area more than the required area to safe the
structure from collapse or damage of structure.

There are two types of slabs which are one way & two way slab. The beam carry the loading from
self-weight and dead loads of the slab and live loads. And, the column carry the half of the dead
load of the long span and short span beam. The long span of beam carry live and dead load.
Otherwise, the short span of beam carry only the self-weight.
