Computer Basics

An electronic device that stores, retrieves and processes data and can be programmed with
instructions. A computer is composed of hardware and software and can exist in various sizes
and configurations.

• Hardwares and Software

The term hardware refers to the physical components of your computer such as the system unit,
mouse, keyboard and monitor etc.

The software is the instructions that make the computer work. CD-ROM, DVD, Floppy Disk, RAM
as and when required.

• Input – Output Devices

Input – How to tell it what to do.

• A keyboard and mouse are the standard way to interact with the computer.

Output – How it shows what it is doing

• The monitor is how the computer sends information back to you. An printer is also an
output device.

• Input: - The mouse, keyboard, scanners, touch pads, light pens and joystick.

• Output: - Monitor, Printers, Plotters and Speakers.

Computer Aided Design

CAD is the use of computer-based software to aid in the design process.

CAD software is frequently used by different types of engineers and designers.

CAD software can be used to create 2-D drawing and 3-D drawing.

• CAD Benefits:

1. Lower Production cost for designs.

2. Quicker project completion due to efficient workflow and design process.


3. Higher quality design with documentation.

4. Use of digital files can make collaborating with colleagues simpler.

5. Software features can support generative design.
