NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ROURKELA

END-SEMESTER EXAMINATION
SESSION: 2024-2025 (Autumn)
B. Tech. 1st Semester
Subject: Engineering Mechanics Total Marks: 50
Subject code: CE1100/CE1000 Time: 3 hours

Q Answer any five out of six questions. Assume suitable data if Marks CO LL
No. necessary. Answer all questions in one place.
1. a) Determine the force in the member CK of the loaded truss 4 3 L3
shown below.

b) The truss shown in the figure below has a beam suspended 6 3 L3

from two cables. The beam supports the distributed load
as shown in the figure. Determine the tension in the cables,
reactions at the supports and the force carried by the
members AC, AH, DF, EF, HG and CG of the truss.
2. Determine the moment of inertia for the shaded area about 10 2 L3
the x and y axes.

3. Locate the centroid of the area bounded by the equations

10 2 L4
4x2+9y2-8x-18y-23 = 0 and x2-2x-y+2 = 0, respectively. Also,
determine the moment of inertia of the area about the
centroidal axis parallel to the x-axis.

4. a) The machine part ABC is supported by a frictionless 5 1 L3

hinge at B and a 10° wedge at C, as shown in the figure
below. Knowing that the maximum coefficient of static
friction at both wedge surfaces is 0.20, determine (i) the
force P required to move the wedge (ii) the components of
the corresponding reaction at B.

b) Solve the same problem by assuming that the force P is 5 1 L3

directed in moving the wedge toward the right side, and
determine (i) the force P required to move the wedge, (ii)
the components of the corresponding reaction at B.

5. a) Members GH, FG, OP, and NO are insulated cables; all 5 3 L3

other members are steel bars. For the loading shown,
compute the forces in the members FJ, EJ, EK, KQ, LQ,
and LP on the triangular truss HKNPQEF.

b) If the load of 35 kN is applied at an angle of 30o with 5 3 L3

horizontal, how will the reaction forces at these
members change?
35 kN

6. Determine the forces in members DE, EG, FG, and FH of 10 3 L3

the truss shown.
