Candidate number: 1551 Instructor: Abi Macleod-Clark (abimacleodclark@msn.com) Freehand drawings • Drawing without looking at the paper was a good starting exercise as it removed the anxiety of having to draw something very well. • It was nice to just see where the pencil took me Taking it further • I really enjoyed the outcome of my freehand drawings so I imported them to my tablet and made a digital version of them to see them refined. The results surprised me as I found them to be quite unique style elements (similar to modern day fashion patterns) . Sketching • The first exercise I did was sketching. This was the most intimidating for two reasons: • It was the first exercise and I thought I was expected to produce very accurate drawings • It was difficult not to compare oneself with others • However, the more that I just began to start drawing and become focused on drawing the model. I found this activity particularly therapeutic as I wasn’t ‘creatively’ demanding, just letting the pencil work for you. • I was also surprised by how much anatomy I learned through muscle memory. Pastels
• Working with pastels was very different
from sketching. • I did not have to focus on the details or precision. I found this process extremely powerful as I was able to use my imagination and produce a piece that was focused on colour. • I had never actually used pastels before so this lesson was also educational from a technical standpoint. I learnt how to properly blend colours in order to create a certain mood or environment. • I chose a rainbow colour scheme for the eye as I tried to create a hypnotic effect. Combination I tried to combine the skills I learnt while sketching and using the pastels. I was inspired by Michelangelo’s ‘creation of adam’. So I used the hands to show the battle between creativity (through the colour pastels) and logic (through the sketching).
It was a good piece to showcase what I learnt from the previous
sessions. Painting Extra activity
• I had some paint left that I did not want to
waste so I thought I would try a new marveling paint pouring technique. Although this was no anatomical it was a good way of focusing on mindfulness. The mixing of the paint was very calming. Sculpture- Bronchus • For this task I decided to combine two of the exercises into one. First I did some abstract sculpting with foil and masking tape and then strengthened the structure using salt dough. I finally wrapped it in string to represent the rings on the trachea and bronchi.
• I decided to combine the two tasks as I wanted
to produce a fully finished and detailed piece. • I learnt a lot about both the anatomical structure of the bronchi as well as the steps it takes to structurally reconstruct it step by step. Progress of Abstract sculpting and Salt dough Collage • In this session I was able to explore the different layers of the body using pop-art. I found this method useful to show how important visual Pop-up Art learning is. I enjoyed piecing these pictures together as it even felt a bit surgical. Pop-up Art Sewing
• Sewing was a completely new activity for me. I
had barely ever sewn in my life before. Practicing greatly helped my hand eye coordination. This would be quite useful as I will surely need these skills as a doctor (e.g. suturing, surgery, etc.) Mixed Media
• For my mixed media piece I
wanted to combine my favorite techniques (clay) with my least favorite (collage). I also created a digital version. I really enjoyed this as I loved to see the mixture of different textures. Some of the digital art I did during the course Thank you !
