y 62 78 65 70 38 54 60 32 31
b) Two random variables have the regression lines with equations 4 x  5 y  33  0 (7M)
and 20 x  9 y  107 .
Find the means values and the correlation co-efficient between x and y .
Or
4 The following data pertain to the cosmic ray doses measured at various altitudes: (15M)
Altitude(feet) x 50 450 780 1200 4400 4800 5300
Dose rate(mem/year) y 28 30 32 36 51 58 69

(ii) Fit an exponential curve.

(ii) Use the result obtained in part (i) to estimate the mean does at an altitude of
3,000 feet.
UNIT-III
5 a) Define Probability of an Event. (8M)
(iv) Prove that the impossible event has probability zero.
(ii) If 𝐴 is the complement of 𝐴 then prove that 𝑃(𝐴 ) = 1 − 𝑃(𝐴).
b) In a Certain City, 40 percent of the people consider themselves Conservatives, (7M)
35 percent consider themselves to be Liberals, and 25 percent consider
themselves to be Independents. During a Particular election, 45 Percent of
Conservatives voted, 40 percent of the Liberals voted and 60 percent of the
Independents are voted. If a randomly selected person voted, find the probability

6 a) Out of 2000 families with 4 children each, how many would you expect to have (8M)
(i) at least 1 boy (ii) 2 boys (iii) 1 or 2 girls (iv) no girls?
b) Suppose 220 misprints are distributed randomly throughout a book of 200 pages. (7M)
Find the probability that a given page contains

(ii) 1 misprint (iii) 2 misprints
(iv) 2 or more misprints.
UNIT-IV
7 a) Define Population and sample with examples. (8M)
b) Explain Point and Interval estimations. (7M)

Or
8 a) The mean and standard deviation of the diameters of a sample of 250 rivet heads (8M)
manufactured by a company are 0.72642 inch and 0.00058 inch respectively.
Find 98% confidence limits for the mean diameter of all the rivet heads
manufactured by the company.
b) Five measurements of the reaction time of an individual to certain stimuli were (7M)
recorded as 0.28, 0.30, 0.27, 0.33, 0.31 second. Find 95% confidence limits for
the actual mean reaction time.
UNIT-V
9 a) A store keeper wanted to buy a large quantity of bulbs from two brands A and B (8M)
respectively. He bought 100 bulbs from each brand A and B and found by
testing brand A had mean life time of 1120 hrs and the S.D of 75 hrs and brand
B had mean life time 1062 hrs and S.D of 82 hrs. Examine whether the
difference of means is significant. Use a 0.05 level of significance.
b) The following random samples are measurements of the heat-producing capacity (7M)
(in millions of calories per ton) of specimens of coal from two mines:
Mine 1: 8,260 8,130 8,350 8,070 8,340 --
Mine 2: 7,950 7,890 7,900 8,140 7,920 7,840
Use the 0.01 level of significance to test whether the differences between the
mean of these two samples is significance.
Or
10 a) In a random sample of 100 tube lights produced by company A, the mean life (8M)
time of tube light is 1190 hours with standard deviation of 90 hours. Also in a
random sample of 75 tube lights from company B the mean life time is 1230
hours with standard deviation of 120 hours. Is there a difference between the
mean lifetimes of the two brands of tube lights at a significance level of 0.05?
b) In two independent samples of sizes 8 and 10 the sum of squares of deviations of (7M)
the sample values from the respective sample means were 84.4 and 102.6. Test
whether the difference of variances of the populations is significant or not. Use a
0.05 level of significance.
