Elective Sheet 04

The document outlines an elective course for engineering students at Fayoum University, focusing on selected topics in manufacturing. It includes various tasks such as using the Hollier method to determine machine sequences, constructing network diagrams, and calculating production capacities for different machines. Students are required to analyze data related to machine operations and layouts in a batch production environment.

Fayoum University Elective Course, Spring Semester

Faculty of Engineering Selected Topics in Manufacturing

Mechanical Engineering Department Engineering
Sheet # 4

Please answer the following questions.

1. Use Hollier method #1and #2 to find the most suitable machine sequence. Also
calculate of Percentage of in-sequence moves and Percentage of backtracking
moves using flow diagram for both methods.

2. Four machines used to produce a family of parts are to be arranged into a GT

cell. The from-to data for the parts processed by the machines are shown in the
table below. (a) Determine the most logical sequence of machines for this data.
(b) Construct the network diagram for the data, showing where and how many
parts enter and exit the system. (c) Compute the percentages of in-sequence
moves, bypassing moves, and backtracking moves in the solution. (d) Develop
a feasible layout plan for the cell.

3. A certain part is routed through six machines in a batch production plant. The
setup and operation times for each machine are given in the table below. The
batch size is 100. Determine the workload time.

4. The turret lathe section has six machines, all devoted to the production of the
same part. The section operates 12 shifts/week. The number of hours per shift
averages 8 hr. Average production rate of each machine is 20 unit/hr.
a) Determine the weekly production capacity of the turret lathe section.
b) Determine the weekly production capacity of the turret lathe section, if the
availability of the machine (A) is 90% and the utilization of the machine is
80%.
