Answer Key

Exam Date: 29-11-2021 Session: AN

Duration: 1 Hour [01:30 PM To 02:30 PM] [Total Marks: 20]

PART-A

Instructions: 1. Answer the following questions. 4X1=4

2. Each question carries ONE mark.

1. Define first moment of Area.

Ans.
The first moment of an area about a line is the product of area and the
perpendicular distance of its centroid from the given line.

2. State any two applications of centroid in the Engineering field.

Ans.
1. centroids are similarly related to the distribution of areas and volume.

2. To calculate area moment of inertia of the section which may used to

determine the size of the beam or Girder.

3. when a body is rotating , the resistance of the body againest rotation

depends on its mass moment ofinertia.

3. Find the moment of inertia of a rectangular section 200 mm width and 400
mm depth about the base.
Ans.
4. State Perpendicular axes theorem to determine Moment of Inertia.
Ans.
According to the perpendicular axis theorem, the moment of inertia of a
plane figure about centroidal axis perpendicular to the plane of the lamina
is equal to the sum of its moments of inertia about two mutually
perpendicular centroid axes laying in the plane lamina.

If = Moment of inertia of plane figure about its centroidal axis

perpendicular to its plane.

Then

where are the moments of inertia of that plane figure about its
two mutually perpendicular centroidal axis namely x-axis and y-axis.

PART-B

Instructions: 1. Answer the following questions. 2X3=6

2. Each question carries THREE marks.

5(a). In a rectangular lamina 100 x 180 mm a rectangular opening of 80 x 40 mm

is made as shown in fig . Find the position of centroid of the remaining area
from the top.
Ans.

The given rectangular lamina is symmertical

about y-axis , since opening is symmerticaliy about y-axis.

----- OR ----
5(b). A Masonry dam is 8 m height on the water face is vertical. The top width is 2
m and base width 6 m. Find the position of the centroid.
Ans.

6(a). State the necessity of finding Moment of Inertia for various engineering
problems
Ans.
It is an important criteria for evaluating the strength of a structure.

Since it determines the section modulus.

section modulus (z) = I/Y, I = M.I of a sction about centriodal axis

from above equation , Z is Proportional to I,

one can say that higher the M.I , Higher will be the section modulus

The higher the sectional modulus, the greater is the strength of

structure/yielding stresses developing.

so is very important to know about the Moment of inertia.

----- OR ----
6(b). The moment of inertia of a triangle about its base is 1526.5 X 10 4 mm4 .
Width of the base is 125 mm. Find the height of the triangle.
Ans.
sol: The M.I of a triangle its base is , width of the
base b = 125 mm

M.I of a triangle about the base =

PART-C

Instructions: 1. Answer the following questions. 2 X 5 = 10

2. Each question carries FIVE marks.

7(a). Determine the position of centroid for the dam section shown below.

Ans.
A1= Area of the rectangle(large)=2x24=48m2, X1= , Y1= =12m

A2= Area of the rightangle triangle (large)= , X2=

, Y2=

A3= Area of the small rectangle=1.5x3=4.5m2 , X3= , Y3=

A4= Area of the small rectangle triangle= , X4=

, Y4=

----- OR ----
7(b). Find the position of centroid of a channel section from left side and bottom
edge for the figure shown below.

Ans.
Rectangle (1):

A1=140x25=3500mm2 , X1= , Y1=

Rectangle (2):

A2=25x100=2500mm2, X2= , Y2=

Rectangle (3):

A3=120x25=3000mm2, X3= , Y3=

8(a). Determine the M.I of z- section as shown in fig.below

Ans.

Dividing the given lamina into three rectangles

Rectangle –1

A1 = 6000 mm2

x1 = 170 + 300 / 2

= 320 mm

y1 = 20 / 2 = 10 mm
Rectangle –2

A2 = 170 x 30 = 5100 mm2

x2 = 170 + 30 / 2 = 185 mm

y2 = 20 + 170 / 2 = 105 mm

Rectangle - 3

A3 = 6000 mm²

x3 = 100mm

y3 = 220 – (30 / 2)

= 205 mm

Substituting the values and simplifying

Y = å(Ay)/ A = 106.75mm X = å(Ax)/ A = 202.54mm

•Applying parallel axis theorem, M.I about centroidal X – axis is given by,

IXX = å [Ixx+ A( Y - y)²]

= 300 x 20³ /12 + 6000(106.75 –10)² + 30 x170³/12 + 5100(106.75 -

105)²+ 200 x 30³/12 + 6000 (106.75 -205)²

IXX = 127.029 x 106 mm4

Applying parallel axis theorem, M.I. about centroidal Y-axis is given by,

IYY = å [Iyy+ A(X - x)²]

= 20 x 300³/12 + 6000(202.54 - 320)²

+ 170 x 30³/12 + 5100(202.54 -185)²

+ 30 x 200³/12 + 6000(202.54 -100)²

IYY = 21.818 x 106 mm4

----- OR ----
8(b). A built- up section is formed by an I-section and two cover plates 250x20mm
on each flange, shown in the figure. Find the moment of inertia about
centroidal axes X-X and Y-Y and also find least radius of gyration.

Ans.
The given built-up section is symmetrical about both X-axis and Y-axis.The
X-axis passes at middle of its depth= from both top of
the top flange and bottom of the bottom flange. Similarly Yses vertically
throough the centre of the built-up section.

Area of the top flange plate= Area of the bottom flange plate

i.e., a1=250x20=5000

Area of flanges of I-section

i.e., a2= 150x20=3000

Area of the web= a3= (220-20-20)20=3600

Moment of inertia of the given built-up section about X-X axis

where:-
=

Moment of inertia of the given built-up section about Y-Y axis

Least radius of gyration=

in this case

Area of the built-up section =
