Aristocrat Mav500 Firmware Update Procedure
Aristocrat Mav500 Firmware Update Procedure
A recent investigation by ATI has identified a potential security issue in four legacy
game titles running on the MKVI platform.
Resolution ATI has developed an Enhanced RNG memory extension board for all existing
game titles running on outdated firmware.
This is a plug in board that includes more system memory and more game
memory. This board also includes a more complex random number generator
(RNG) with an onboard field programmable gate array (FPGA) as an additional
level of security.
This board is compatible with all MKVI and MKVI XP main boards and requires no
preventative maintenance.
MKVI Because of the age of the MKVI hardware and the advancement of technology
supported since its introduction, there are a limited number of hardware options available for
ongoing support. Customers should perform a site survey to validate their EGMs
hardware will support the RNG enhancement.

Sections with tasks that require tools to complete them include a list of recommended
tools. These lists are recommended because the descriptions of the tasks are meant to
identify one way to successfully complete them.
Recommended tools
Digital camera
Warning Because you are required to use hand and power tools, climb ladders,
and lift heavy objects, you must use appropriate personal protective equipment
(PPE) and proper handling techniques at all times. Failure to do so will increase
your risk of personal injury.
Unload your installation components from the delivery vehicle, and inspect the
packaging for damage.
Take a Picture A picture must be taken of any packaging that shows obvious
signs of damage, and the image must be attached to the installation case. Failure
to do so will jeopardize a claim of damage.
Use a digital camera to take a picture of any packaging that shows obvious signs
of damage, upload and attach the image to your installation case, and contact your
Regional Manager for guidance before continuing with your field service activity.
Note The packaging for some items can include a ShockWatch impact indicator
label. A package that has been shaken with sufficient force during transit will cause
the center of the label to change from white to red.
ShockWatch label with white center ShockWatch label with red center
Take a Picture A picture must be taken of any impact indicator label that has
turned red, and the image must be attached to the installation case. Failure to do
so will jeopardize a claim of damage.
Use a digital camera to take a picture of any packaging with an impact indicator
label that has turned red, upload and attach the image to your installation case,
and contact your Regional Manager for guidance before continuing with your field

Recommended tools
Hand dolly
Inspect all relevant aisles, doorways, and hallways between the receiving area of
the casino and your work area on the casino floor for adequate clearance, plan
your route, and use a hand dolly to move your installation components to your
work area.
Recommended tools
Utility knife
Use a utility knife to carefully remove the packaging from the EGMs, and discard it.
Recommended tools
Caution tape
Warning Because people are generally on a casino gaming floor during all
business hours and things like boxes, tools, and cables can be a tripping hazard,
you must take reasonable action to prevent access to your work area by anyone
not on your installation team. Failure to do so will introduce the risk of injury to
casino patrons and personnel.
1. Stage your tools in your work area, and take reasonable action to prevent access
to your area by people who are not part of your installation team.
Note You can tie cation tape around your work area, line up chairs not in use, and
ask the attending casino personnel to set up crowd control stanchions.
Because the aisles between rows of EGMs can be narrow, you can also ask the
attending casino personnel to take EGMs next to your work area out of service.
2. Ask the attending casino personnel to take EGMs next to your work area out of
service as necessary.
Warning Because you are required to handle energized devices, you must
remove all metal wrist watches, bracelets, necklaces, and rings before performing
any installation, conversion, or maintenance activity. Failure to do so will increase
your risk of electric shock.
3. Remove all metal wrist watches, bracelets, necklaces, and rings, and stow them in
a safe place.

Radial pin main door key
Note An electrostatic sensitive device (ESD) is any electronic device that can
be damaged by common static electric charges which can build up on people,
clothing, and tools.
Caution ESDs (such as circuit boards) should be held by the edges to avoid
contact with the electronic components. Also, ESDs should not be bent, flexed, or
placed on metal surfaces. These precautions should be followed when handling
ESDs during any field service activity.
1. Retrieve your main door key from your tool kit, and-on the right side of the EGM-
insert the key in the main door lock, turn it clockwise, and guide the door into the
open position.
2. Reach into the lower compartment of the EGM (just under the bill acceptor) and
verify the EGM is turned OFF by flipping the main power switch on the EGM
power supply into the OFF position.

Logic door key
1. Retrieve an anti-static mat from your tool kit, and place it on a flat surface.
2. Retrieve your logic door key from your tool kit, insert it in the logic door lock, turn it
clockwise, and open the logic cage door.
Note Because the logic cage door is spring loaded, it will remain in the open
position after it is opened.
3. Look into the logic cage, and inspect the main board for signs of warping at the
center of the board.
Inspect the
main board
for warping.
Note The main board should be flat. If there are signs of warping at the center of
the board, a picture should be taken and attached to the Remedy case, the serial
number of the EGM should be recorded, and it should be noted that the board has
a potential risk of failure.
4. Use your thumbs to pull the two tabs (one on each side of the front edge of the
assembly) outward to disengage it from the backplane, slide it out of the logic
cage, and place it on your mat.
Remove the
main board
assembly from
the logic cage.
Note If the tabs are missing, the board can be removed by pinching the front edge
of the board between your thumbs and forefingers and sliding it out of the logic
cage. Extra care should be taken to not flex the board while using this method to
remove it from the cage.
Note The existing EPROM chips do not need to be removed from the main board.
The new EPROM chips on the extension board will override the EPROM chips on
the main board.
5. Leave the existing EPROM chips on the main board, and cover them with tamper-
proof tape.
Cover the
existing EPROM
chips with tape.
Note For this conversion, if a system board is already present on the main board,
it must be removed and then replaced with a new system board that is configured
for the conversion.
If no new system board is available, the current system EPROM chips can be
removed from the main board and replaced with the new Setchip EPROM chips.
Recommended tools
Chip extractor
Caution The semi-circular notches in the EPROM chips must be oriented to the
left. If the notches are oriented to the right and the chips are forced into place, it
can either bend some connector pins on the chip or break some pins off into the
main board.
1. Use a chip extractor to carefully remove the system EPROM from socket U70, and
replace it with Setchip EPROM U3.
2. Use a chip extractor to carefully remove the system EPROM from socket U83, and
replace it with Setchip EPROM U2.
Insert the
U3 U2 Setchip EPROM
chips here.
3. Inspect the connector pins that connect the main board to the backplane, and
verify there are no bent pins.
Caution Because forcing the main board assembly into the logic cage can either
bend some connector pins on the assembly or break some pins off into the
backplane, extra care should be taken when sliding the assembly into place. The
availability of replacement parts is not guaranteed.
4. Slide the main board assembly back into the logic cage, and use your thumbs to
press the two tabs (one on each side of the front edge of the assembly) inward to
re-engage it with the backplane.
Note To save changes, the logic cage door must remain open while the EGMs are
being configured.

If the EGM does not boot and display graphic content, the logic cage will need to
be accessed to inspect the LED indicators on the extension board to validate the
boot failure does not reside with the new hardware.
If the extension board is not the failure point, review the cabinet for the root cause
of the boot failure. Now with the age of the cabinet hardware, the failure point may
not reside with new equipment and be isolated to another component within the
cabinet.
If the game title boots and displays graphic content, please proceed with applying
site-specific game settings for support.
