Department of Mechanical Engineering
Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (C U E T)
Level 2, Term I, Examination 2020 (Online) Course No: ME 231 Full Marks: 150 Time: 2 hours 30 minutes (Including Uploading Time) Course Title: Engineering Mechanics-I Date: 17/10/2021 The figures in the right margin indicate full marks. The questions are of equal value. There are 03 questions in each section. Answer any 02 questions from each section. Use separate script for each section. Marks Section: A 1. a) Knowing that the tension in the rope AC is 365 N, determine the resultant of the three forces 17 ½ extended at point C of post BC as shown in Fig. 1(a). b) Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Knowing that P = 360 N, determine the 20 tension (i) in cable AC (ii) in cable BC as shown in Fig. 1(b).

2. a) A prybar is used to remove a nail as shown in Fig. 2(a). Determine the moment of the 60 lb for 17 ½ θ about the point O of the contact between the prybar and small support block. b) A 50 kg crate is attached to the trolley beam system as shown in Fig. 2(b). Knowing that a = 20 1.5 m, determine i) the tension in cable CD ii) the reaction at B.

5. a) A 6.5 m ladder AB leans against a wall as shown in Fig. 5(a). Assuming that the coefficient of 17 ½ static friction µs is the same at A and B, determine the smallest value of µs for which equilibrium is maintained. b) A wedge A of negligible weight is to be driven between two 100 lb plates B and C as shown in 20 Fig. 5(b). The coefficient of static friction between all surfaces of contact is 0.35. Determine the magnitude of the force P required to start moving the wedge if plates are equally free to move.
