1
Hi there
I am so-o-o GLAD that you have chosen me to be
your amigurumi crochet guide and decided to
create this cute Dag with my help!
THANK YOU.
This will be an unusual toy, because I wanted to
gain resemblance with the 2D cartoon character.
Practically that means, that I had to oddly bend the
Beaver’s snout.
So, do not be surprised during the creation process:
this is how I meant it to be J

Let’s begin!

The plan
1) First, I will give you the list of ABBREVIATIONS, that I am going to use in this tutorial
and remind you of the most common TECHNIQUES.

2) After that, I will show you an INVISIBLE single crochet decrease method.

3) After that, I will explain to you HOW TO READ my patterns.

4) In the next block, I will provide you with the list of MATERIALS AND TOOLS needed
for the Dag’s creation process.

5) Then, I will share with you the long-waited crochet PATTERN.

6) After that, I will explain to you how to SHAPE the FACE of the toy. Finally, I will teach
you how to ASSEMBLE all the details together and share with you some of My TIPS.

2
Abbreviations and Technology

ch =
chain stitch

sc =
single crochet

sl.st = slip stitch

dc =
double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

inc = increase
Increases look like a
“slingshots” on a crocheted fabric, so it is easy to spot them. You going to need increases to
WIDEN your crochet detail. To increase one stitch, you have to simply work TWO stitches IN
ONE stitch.

dec = decrease = sc2tog

Decrease – is really just
subtracting of a stitch in a
single crochet row. You
going to need decreases to NARROW your crochet detail.

3
hdc2tog – that is decrease made of 2 half double crochet stitches

dc2tog - that is decrease made of 2 double crochet stitches

hdc3tog – three half double crochet stitches decreased to one

dc3tog – three double crochet stitches decreased to one

hdc2into1 – that is an increase made of 2 half double crochet stitches (two half
double crochet stitches are crocheted into one stitch)

hdc3into1 – three half double crochet stitches crocheted into one stitch

dc2into1 – that is an increase made of 2 double crochet stitches (two double crochet
stitches are crocheted into one stitch)

dc3into1 – three double crochet stitches crocheted into one stitch

How to make an invisible decrease

The standard method of decreasing is to SC2TOG, which leaves a bit of a bump and a small
gap. On the one hand, it makes it easier to find a decrease if you have lost the count, but on
the other hand, stuffing is going to show through the gaps and bumps will give an uneven
surface… and all the work will look untidy. However, if you promise to be a good girl and
count carefully your stitches, and use stitch marker, I will show you my secret DECREASE
METHOD, that makes decreases INVISIBLE!

1) Insert the hook under the front loop of the first single crochet stitch. Do not yarn
over.

2) Insert the hook under the front loop of the second stitch and pick it up onto the
hook (it won’t be easy at first and it will take some time to get to use to this move,
but the result is absolutely worth it!). Yarn over.

3) Draw through the first two loops. Yarn over and draw through all loops.
4
Now let’s play a game: spot the decrease! J

How to read my pattern

sc # = make n single crochet stitches, one in each stitch.

Number of the row

Pattern, you have to repeat
Number of times
number of stitches in a row after finishing a row……

4) (Sc 2, inc) * 6 (24)

That means, that in the fourth row you going to repeat fragment “two single crochet
stitches, increase” six times and at the end of the row you will get 24 stitches.

5
Materials & Tools

1) YARN. I used DK weight (8 ply / 11 wpi) half cotton yarn (100g – 330mt (3,5 Oz –
361 yards))

Brown (Alize Cotton Gold, shade 493) – 140 g (5.0 Oz)

Black (Alize Cotton Gold, shade 60) – 30 g (1.0 Oz)
Light green (King Cole, Cherished Baby Double knitting, shade 1430) – 20 g (0.7
Oz)
Yellow (Alize Extra 100g – 220mt (3.53 Oz – 241yrd), shade 488) – 7 g (0.3 Oz)
Pink (Alize Extra 100g – 220mt (3.53 Oz – 241yrd), shade 149) – 5 g (0.17 Oz)
Milky (Alize Cotton Gold, shade: 62) – 5 g (0.17 Oz)

Thinner black cotton yarn (100g – 210 mt (3.5 Oz - 230 yards)) – about 20 g (0.7
Oz)

2) HOOK. I used 2.5 mm (US size B1 – C2) and 2 mm crochet hook (US size B1)

3) Polyester fiberfill, wool, wadding etc. for STUFFING (about 60 g (2.1 Oz))

4) Safety eyes 4mm

5) Hot glue (optional)

6) Wire 25cm (10“). Thickness of the wire: 1,2mm (0,47“)

7) Black insulating fabric tape

8) YARN NEEDLE, sewing PINS, SCISSORS, stitch MARKER.

J That’s it with the boring staff! Yeho-o-o! Now I invite you to the world of magic stitches!
Our journey begins!

Patterns

Head-body
NB! Use DOUBLE brown yarn and 3.0 mm crochet hook. Crochet in spiral.

Using DOUBLE yarn, you will save a looot of time (you will achieve the desired size of
the detail faster) and the detail will be thicker and will hold the shape better.

0) Chain 61 and join them in a circle

Now work even for 24 rounds:

Close the opening as it is described below.

How to close the opening

1) Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and fasten off. Thread the yarn tail into a yarn
needle.

2) Insert the needle from the center and under the front loop only. Draw the yarn
through. Pick up all the remaining stitches the same way.

3) Grab the yarn and pull until the hole is tightly closed.

4) Make a double knot.

5) Exit the needle elsewhere on the work, pull the yarn tail taut, and snip it right against
the body (the tail should disappear inside the body).

12
Attach the tip of nose with the draft stitch (later on, when you add the teeth, you will
attach it finally).

Then fix the “snout” on the sides too (I showed those stitches on the second picture
with pink yarn, to make them more obvious, but you do it with the brown yarn!):

Thread the yarn tail into a yarn needle and sew free stitches together as it is shown
(with the white thread of yarn) in the picture below. You make the sewing with the
back yarn!

Don’t stuff this details.

Finish as an open piece, leave a tail (about 30 cm (12 in)) to sew the snout to the head.

15
Thread the yarn tail into a yarn needle and sew free stitches together.

Don’t stuff this details.

Finish as an open piece, leave a tail (about 30 cm (12 in)) to sew the snout to the head.

Right eye
Use yellow yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook.

0) Chain 2
1) Sc 6 into the 2nd stitch

Insert the 4 mm plastic safety eye as it is shown in the next picture.

9) (Sc 1, dec)*6 (12)

Stuff the detail.

Finish as an open piece (as it is described below), leave a tail (about 30 cm (12 in)) to sew right eye to the left
one.

16
How to finish an open piece

1) Make a slip stitch to the next stitch. Cut the yarn, leaving about 40 cm (16 in) long tail
(you will use it later to sew detail together). Draw the yarn tail through the loop.

2) Insert the hook through the next stitch from FRONT to BACK and draw the yarn tail
through.

3) Insert the hook through the next stitch from BACK to FRONT and draw the yarn tail
through.

My TIP: See below ANOTHER METHOD, how to finish an open piece in a way that you
cannot spot the ending of the row (it is especially important for such parts as eyes, pupils
and spots on the body, where you definitely need an even edge).

1) Pull the tail under the both loops of the first stitch of the previous row

2) Pull the tail back, under the FRONT loop of the last stitch of the row

17
Left eye
Use yellow yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook.

0) Chain 2
1) Sc 6 into the 2nd stitch
2) Inc 6 (12)
3) (Sc 1, inc)*6 (18)
4) (Sc 5, inc)*3 (21)
Insert the 4 mm plastic safety eye as it is shown in the picture below.

5) Sc 21

10) Dec, sc 24 (25)
11) (Sc 3, dec)*5 (20)
12) (Sc 3, dec)*4 (16)
Stuff the detail.

13) (Sc 2, dec)*4 (12)

14) Dec 6
Close the opening.

Sew right eye to the left one as it is shown in the right picture below.

18

Finish as an open piece, leave a tail (about 50 cm (20 in)) to sew the tail to the body.

Cut from the sheet wadding the shape, that repeats the shape of the beaver’s tail.
Stuff the detail with this piece of wadding.

Legs *2 details
You are going to crochet fingers first, then you will join them and then proceed with
the upper part of the leg.

Start with black cotton yarn and 2.0 mm crochet hook. Crochet in rows.

5) Sc 8
6) Sc 8

23
NB! Those crochet fingers have a tendency to curl, so I advise you to “block” them overnight
to make them straight.

How to “block” details

1) Soak details in sugar syrup (1/4 glass of hot water + 2 table spoons of sugar).

2) Fix them with sewing pins on rubberized surface (I use yoga block), giving them a
desired shape.

3) Let them dry overnight.

NB! This trick works only with cotton of half cotton yarn: polyester won’t absorb the syrup.

NB! If the toy is not meant for children, you can use hairspray to straighten the fingers.

How the detail looks like after blocking:

Now you can proceed with the rest of the leg:

Change the color, proceed with brown yarn (in the picture below you will see the mustard color, but YOU
have to use the brown one), use 2.0 mm crochet hook as for the previous part!

1) Sc 8

Change the hook, proceed with 2.5 mm crochet hook!
