1. If 𝑥 + 2 is a factor of 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 & − 3𝑥 ) − 4𝑥 + 𝑎 , find the value of 𝑎.

2. Let 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 & − 𝑥 ) − 14𝑥 + 24.

Use the factor theorem to show that 𝑥 + 4 is a factor of 𝑓(𝑥).

Determine the other linear factors of 𝑓(𝑥).

3. When the expression 2𝑥 & + 𝑎𝑥 ) − 5𝑥 − 2 is divided by 2𝑥 − 1 the remainder is -3.5.

Determine the value of the constant 𝑎.

4. Given that 𝑥 − 2 is a factor of 𝑘 𝑥 = 2𝑥 & − 5𝑥 ) + 𝑥 + 2, factorize 𝑘 𝑥 completely.

5. Given that the remainder when 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 & − 𝑥 ) − 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 is divided by 𝑥 + 1 is 6, and

that 𝑥 − 2 is a factor, determine the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏.

6. Derive the polynomial, 𝑃(𝑥), of degree 3 which has roots equal to 1, 2 and -4.

7. The expression 𝑎𝑥 & − 𝑥 ) + 𝑏𝑥 − 1. Leaves remainders -33 and 77 when divided by 𝑥 +

2 and 𝑥 − 3 respectively. Find a and b.

8. The expression 2𝑥 & + 𝑎𝑥 ) − 72𝑥 − 18 leaves a remainder of 17 when divided by 𝑥 + 5.

Find a.

9. Find the remainder when 𝑥 & + 3𝑥 − 2 is divided by 𝑥 + 2.

10. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 & + 𝑎𝑥 ) + 𝑏𝑥 + 12. Given that the remainders when 𝑓(𝑥) is divided by 𝑥 + 1
and 𝑥 + 3 are 12 and -30 respectively, find a and b.

11. Solve the following equations:

(a) 2𝑥 & + 3𝑥 ) − 3𝑥 − 2 = 0

(b) 𝑥 & − 3𝑥 ) + 𝑥 + 2 = 0

(c)𝑥 & + 𝑥 ) − 𝑥 = 1

(c) 𝑥 & + 6𝑥 ) + 11𝑥 + 6 = 0

(d) 𝑥 & − 4𝑥 ) + 𝑥 + 6 = 0

12. If 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 & − 3𝑥 ) + 𝑥 − 3, show that 𝑥 − 2 is a factor of 𝑓 𝑥 + 1 .
