Transformation of
Exercise 1: Simple → Complex

Convert the following simple sentences into complex


Sentences – sentences.

Exercises with 1. I know his address.


2. She admitted her mistake.
Answers 3. He confessed his guilt.
4. Due to heavy rain, the match was canceled.
5. His intelligence surprised us.

Answers:

1. I know where he lives.


2. She admitted that she had made a mistake.
3. He confessed that he was guilty.
4. As it rained heavily, the match was canceled.
5. We were surprised because he was intelligent.
Exercise 2: Simple
1. Being tired, he went to bed early.
2. In spite of his poverty, he is happy.

→ Compound 3.

He completed his work before sunset.
He worked hard to pass the exam.
5. Seeing a snake, she screamed.

Answers:

1. He was tired, so he went to bed early.


2. He is poor, but he is happy.
3. He completed his work, and the sun had not set.
4. He wanted to pass the exam, so he worked
hard.
5. She saw a snake, and she screamed.
Exercise 3:
1. He worked hard, but he failed.
2. He was ill, so he didn’t go to school.

Compound → 3.

He is rich, yet he is not happy.

Simple 5. The sun set, and we returned home.

Answers:

1. Despite working hard, he failed.


2. Being ill, he didn’t go to school.
3. Running fast, she missed the train.
4. Despite being rich, he is not happy.
5. After the sunset, we returned home.
Exercise 4:
1. He was ill, so he stayed at home.
2. She was angry, but she didn’t say anything.

Compound → 3. The teacher was absent, so the students left


early.

Complex 4.

He is honest, and everyone respects him.
I was busy, so I couldn’t attend the meeting.

Answers:

1. Since he was ill, he stayed at home.


2. Although she was angry, she didn’t say anything.
3. As the teacher was absent, the students left
early.
4. Because he is honest, everyone respects him.
5. As I was busy, I couldn’t attend the meeting.
Exercise 5: Complex
1. Since he was late, he missed the train.
2. Although she was tired, she continued working.

→ Simple 3. Because he was intelligent, he passed the exam


easily.
4. When he heard the news, he was shocked.
5. If you work hard, you will succeed.

Answers:

1. Being late, he missed the train.


2. Despite being tired, she continued working.
3. Due to his intelligence, he passed the exam
easily.
4. Hearing the news, he was shocked.
5. By working hard, you will succeed.
Exercise 6:
1. If you study well, you will pass the exam.
2. Though he was sick, he attended the meeting.

Complex → 3.

Since it was raining, we stayed indoors.
Because he worked hard, he achieved success.

Compound 5. When she saw the dog, she screamed.

Answers:
