SOME RULES TO REMEMBER

MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE RULES NEATLY


IN YOUR EXERCISE BOOK
Join the following sentences without using ‘ and’, ‘ but’ , ‘ so’

[ Remember there are other words you cannot use as they are synonymous with
and , but , so. This rule is laid down by the ICSE COUNCIL and must be followed

The words are :

As well as , therefore , hence, or, or else, else,


otherwise ,yet , nor, however, and any other word
synonymous with these given words
Do not start a sentence with since, because .Always place it in the middle of the
sentence ]

Rules to remember

There are 3 ways you may change sentences

You have to follow a few rules

TYPE 1

Rules to follow :
1. Interchange of position
2. Positive sentence changed to negative and negative sentence changed
to positive
3. Degree has to be changed – positive to comparative or comparative to
positive

Ex 1 Ravi is as strong as Satish.

Satish is not stronger than Ravi.

1. Interchange of position – Ravi, Satish


2. Positive sentence becomes negative – not
3. Comparative degree written – stronger

Ex 2 Honey is sweeter than sugar.

Sugar is not as sweet as honey.


1. Interchange of position – sugar, honey
2. Positive sentence becomes negative – not
3. Positive degree written – sweet

Ex3 Anne is not as tall as Sue.


Sue is taller than Anne.

1. Interchange of position – Sue, Anne


2. Negative sentence becomes Positive – not removed
3. Comparative degree written – taller

TYPE 2

Rules to follow :
1. Comparative Degree : use any other
2. Positive Degree : use No other
3. You cannot use No other along with a comparative degree

Ex1. Iron is the most useful of all metals. ( superlative )

Iron is more useful than any other metal. ( comparative )

No other metal is as useful as iron. ( positive )

Incorrect to write: No other metal is more useful than iron.

Ex2. Celine Dion is the best singer in the world. ( superlative )

Celion Dion is better than any other singer in the world. ( comparative )
No other singer in the world is as good as Celine Dion. ( positive )

Incorrect to write: No other singer is better than Celine Dion.

TYPE 3

Rules to follow :
1. Comparative Degree : use most other
2. Positive Degree : use very few
3. You cannot use very few along with a comparative degree

Ex1. Celine Dion is one of the best singers in the world. ( superlative )

Celion Dion is better than most other singers in the world. (


comparative )

Very few singers in the world are as good as Celine Dion. ( positive
)

Incorrect to write: Very few singers in the world are better than Celine
Dion.

Ex2. Darjeeling is one of the coldest hill stations in India. ( superlative )

Darjeeling is colder than most other hill stations in India. (


comparative )

Very few hill stations in India are as cold as Darjeeling. ( positive )

Incorrect to write: Very few hill stations in India are colder Darjeeling.

Go through these sentences. Write them down in your


exercise books. We will do them in class tomorrow.
1. She was tired. She had not eaten anything. ( Join )
She was tired as / because/ since she had not eaten anything.

2. Susmita was upset with her friend. She decided to forgive her. (
Join )
Though Susmita was upset with her friend, she decided to
forgive her.
Although / Even though

3. Open the window

Let the window be opened.

4. Finish your homework at once.

You are instructed to finish your homework at once.

Advised, instructed,ordered

5. My purse has been stolen.

Someone / Somebody has stolen my purse.


6. Rajesh is as intelligent as Rakesh. (begin: Rakesh is not…..)

Rakesh is not more intelligent than Rajesh.

7. Malacca is the oldest town in Malaysia. (begin: No other….)

No other town in Malaysia is as old as Malacca.

8. Samudra Gupta was one of the greatest of Indian kings (begin:


Very few…)

Very few Indian kings were as great as Samudra Gupta.

9. I was doubtful whether it was you. (use ‘not’)

I was not sure whether it was you.

10. Were we sent into the world simply to make money? ( begin :
We were . )

We were not sent into the world simply to make money.


11. What a beautiful painting this is! ( begin : This is a . . )

This is a very beautiful painting.
